Big terrorism news yesterday– and this time it involves a real terrorist, not one of that motley assembly of the largely misidentified down at Guantanamo Bay. And as is usual when we're talking about real terrorism in America, the terrorist is a disgruntled white guy.
Yesterday, a jury in Jackson, Tennessee convicted white supremacist Demetrius Van Crocker on five counts of attempting to acquire chemical weapons and explosives to destroy government buildings. Van Crocker, a 40 year old fa
First there was yesterday's Election Day lunch--the GOP-heavy shindig where Weekly editor Will Swaim only got halfway through the hilarious speech I wrote for him because he was shuffling back and forth between pages and so lost my text and thus never got to the payoff, "Thank you, ladies and gentlemen! Don't forget to tip your waitstaff and then have them all deported!" Then there were last night's Dem fiestas in Santa Ana.
I LOVE ELECTION DAY! I do!
I stopped into Proof first; the OC Dem Found
The Supreme Court today ruled the Bush administration must do one of those things it is always extremely reluctant to do: obey the law. By a vote of 5-3, the Supremes said the administration can't proceed with its plans to try prisoners at Guantanamo Bay before military tribunals. Writing for the majority, John Paul Stevens (appointed by President Ford) declared the planned tribunals were illegal under both US law and the Geneva Conventions.

Israeli terrorists have caused significant damage to a power plant in Palestine, insured by the U.S. government for up to $48 million dollars.

Tony Snow, White House Chief of Verbal Diarrhea, previously described Israel's current assault on the Palestinians as legitimate self-defence, precipitated by "the hostage-taking and attacks by Hamas last weekend." Funny, I don't think he would consider the Iraqi insurgency a legitimate self-defence, precipitated by pris
The House Subcommittee on International Organizations, Human Rights, and Oversight held a hearing on detainee treatment at Guantanamo Bay, Cuba yesterday. The meeting focused on a recent FBI report documenting abusive interrogation tactics toward prisoners at the facility.
Present at the hearing was our treasured local representative Dana Rohrabacher (R-CA), who seemed to note nothing wrong with the documented abuse. During the questioning of FBI Inspector General Glenn Fine at the hearing, th
Assemblywoman Diane Harkey put forth a resolution back in February to keep ex-Guantanamo detainees out of Camp Pendleton. With Barack Obama set to close the notorious, quasi-constitutional prison some time next year, Harkey wants to make sure the administration doesn't even think about putting any of the maybe-terrorists in her district's military base.Last week, she explained her reasoning to the Sacramento Statehouse Examiner:"It is very, very important that they are in

So the big question when John Yoo speaks at Chapman University next week about presidential power is: Will he be shackled? Probably not, seeing as how this is not Spain, but were Orange within the Iberian Peninsula nation and NATO ally, he'd be under criminal indictment for sanctioning torture at Guantánamo. The Fletcher Jones Distinguished Visiting Professor of Law's presence at Chapman certainly has sparked debate, and not just the one he's participating in Tuesday morning. The National Lawyer

appeared at the Chapman University debate, President Barack Obama said it would be up to his attorney general whether to prosecute former Bush administration advisors like Yoo. Since that day in Memorial Hall, the heat has turned up on AG Eric Holder to push the case forward, the U.S. Senate is leaning toward its own probe and, as many believed would happen, Spain's top investigative jud
John CampbellIf you're able to stomach the bitchy bitching about Obama, Congressman John Cambpell's "laptop reports" to constituents are actually pretty good reads. Why? He has figured out what makes great bloggers great: gimmicks! This latest bend-over-backwards-to-be-clever narrative structure:Three Liners: OK, so 'one-liner' is the term we all know and are accustomed to hearing, well I can't tell you much in one line, but here's a group of three-liners on various subjects which may give you so
Photo by Jack GouldDo the best hopes for imprisoned Uyghurs rest with this man?Unless it involves legalizing medical marijuana, banning U.S. weapons sales to dictators or erecting a memorial statue for Doobie Brothers guitarist Jeff "Skunk" Baxter, Rep. Dana Rohrabacher (R-Huntington Beach) usually does not find much common ground with Democrats. But the Surfin' Congressman has proven during his--what's it been now, 90-year?--House tenure that he can also be a lone ranger when it comes to his ow

Hot off the announcement that Top Chef Masters is going to be getting a second season, Bravo is developing ANOTHER spin-off. What is it? Take the original Top Chef recipe, add a pinch of Ace of Cakes, maybe a few telegenic hotties that look like Jennifer Aniston and BAM! (with apologies to Emeril), you get Top Chef: Just Desserts, which is a delicious pun, I admit.
The new show, of course, will feature pastry chefs, and is now holding auditions. Desserts, as you know, has never been th
