  • Here Come the Mexican Walk-outs!

Am sure you know about the mass immigrant rallies that bloomed across the country this past week. Now, the marchers visit Garden Grove. Just got word that high school students are walking out, and that cops are handing out tickets to jaywalkers--we're looking at you, Officer J.S. Perkins! How long before the rest of la naranja explodes in a sea of peaceful, American flag-waving brown protesters?

  • Police Put the Smackdown on Mexican Kids

Getting calls from my various Chicano yaktivist pals, and they're saying the kids are marching out of Westminster, Garden Grove, and Anacrime. Reports of police beating up kids on Bristol and Warner in SanTana, although the kids supposedly through rocks. Pendejos. Off to take pictures. . .

  • Killing Peter Cottontail

Just as children's thoughts begin to turn to visions of a friendly rabbit bearing gifts of chocolate, jelly beans, and peeps, Garden Grove is gearing up for a mass killing of bunnies. Since Easter-- both Christianity's most sacred celebration, and the religion's leading bunny-themed holiday-- is almost here, perhaps the county's anti-rabbit strike force should use the Holy Hand Grenade of Antioch. (Of course, the use of blessed munitions may raise separation of Church and State issues.) In

Vanishing priest mystery solved, sadly: Last month, we noted that an OC priest and his companion disappeared in Portland. Today, the Times reports that their bodies were found. Simpsons movie mania: Is this over-the-top, or insanely cool? 7-Eleven's turned 11 stores into Kwik-E-Marts (the fictional Simpsons convenience store), going so far as to rename their Slurpees "Squishees." There's supposedly one in Los Angeles, but that's as close to home as it gets. Milking it for all it's worth: The R

Frisky business: A man and woman dressed as sheriff's deputies have been frisking - and robbing - joggers in Fullerton and Garden Grove. Worse than the real deal? Maybe. But some think not. In and out at the LAT: Los Angeles Times AME Janet Clayton announced the hiring of four multi-lingual staffers yesterday. Then she sent out another note saying she was on her way out. • Citrus Lounge Squeezes Hip Hop Into Garden Grove

UPDATE: Photos of F.I.L.T.H.E.E. and co are up! "Blaze it up!" yells flashy front man F.I.L.T.H.E.E. ( say that five times fast! ) a.k.a Brickmanraw, and no, he's not referring to the music, but apparently, "They said it's ok!" What was ok? I wondered. Suddenly a disembodied hand appeared from the small crowd gathered in front of the stage, holding much too intricate a pipe - ablaze with that sticky icky Cali green as a blunt began its' rounds along the very empty, very spacious dance floo

  • Friday's Headlines. No Surprises: Cracking down on rehab homes

Cracking down on rehab homes: Newport Beach is getting stricter with the city's dozens of oceanside sober-living and drug-treatment houses and plans to unveil a set of rules "designed to eliminate the deleterious effects on the character of the neighborhoods" today. Residents unnerved by this recent development are expected to show up at a Tuesday meeting. (Druggies and alcoholics fighting for their rights... should be quite a show!) Mayor Steve Rosansky says he won't be surprised if legal chal

  • The Prince and His Bridegroom

*Update: Garden Grove Unified is stricter with the book than earlier reported. See after the jump. The proposition that was once about the state constitution and a ban on same-sex marriage has been whittled down to an argument over schools, sex education and, most entertainingly, a little children's book by a Dutch author called “King & King.” In the story, a prince falls in love with another prince and they wed happily ever after. A few weeks ago, after a teacher and her princess bride wer

  • Thai Nakorn's Garden Grove Store Reopening

O.C.'s Thai food-enthusiasts know the story already: Thai Nakorn was originally in Buena Park, blocks away from Knott's when it got kicked out by its landlords to make way for condos. But they moved to Garden Grove soon after, and all was well.  That's when the fire happened. When things looked bleak, it was announced that they would reopen in Stanton. And when they did, it was a resurrection which brought back the favorites. Crispy catfish with mango. Wild boar stew. All was well again.

The Garden Grove Strawberry Festival starts today and continues through the weekend. There will be a parade, strawberry-related food, carnival rides, entertainment, and Cloris Leachman. But c'mon, you wanna know about that giant thing I have pictured above right? Yes, it is the world's biggest strawberry shortcake, weighing more than a half ton. It's a tradition, don-cha-know?! And it's the centerpiece of the festival's opening ceremonies. Here's a little history: "Priscilla's Cake Box, a lo

Edwin Goei There was some chatter on the Chowhound boards today about the progress of the Thai Nakorn in Garden Grove, and it reminded me that the last time I wrote about it here, I reported that March was the target opening date. Would you look at the time!  It's almost freakin' July! Today, in answer to a question that was posed on the foodie bulletin board, a poster named TravelPath said that that the owners were having problems with Garden Grove building inspectors. "One

We got a chance to sit down with their guitar-toting lead singer, Fonzie Heredia. Check out a couple extra tidbits about the band after the jump.
