  • Anaheim's Mystery Hangup Breakup

All-girl Anaheim band Mystery Hangup have called it quits, at least for a while, according to a post on their MySpace blog.Stopping short of saying anything too final, they write, "Mystery Hangup is taking on new challenges and exciting new goals," while specifying "this isn't a goodbye," as they will keep their MySpace updated to announce new musical side projects.Gabriel San Roman--who tipped me off about this news--wrote about Mystery Hangup last spring, read his article here.

  • Mystery Hangup Drummer Lux Joins Nekromantix

We talked just yesterday about Anaheim's Mystery Hangup breaking up, and drummer Lux has already announced her new project: joining the Nekromantix, taking the place of Andy DeMize, who passed away last month due to a car accident. Lux will be the first female in the band's 20-year history.More information can be found on the Nekromantix MySpace blog. The psychobilly band also announced a new permanent guitarist, Franc, who had been playing with them since December.Having canceled their appearan

  • On Minority Prep Athletes Messing with their Racist High School Counterparts

OC Weekly contributor and my occasional KPFK-FM 90.7 producer Gabriel San Roman wrote a great recollection on his personal blog about his days as a varsity basketball player for Savanna High School in Anaheim during the late 1990s. The ostensible reason for the post was a response to arrogant lefties who decry sports as the opiate of the masses; San Roman pointed out that playing prep hoops proved crucial to his political formation."There was never a separation nor was there a sense that basketb

  • More Michael Jackson! Memorial Participants, Plus Coverage Tomorrow

Michael Jackson: still dead. If he wasn't, there wouldn't be that public memorial tomorrow at 10 a.m. at the Staples Center, and we wouldn't be here talking about it. In fact, we're going to be able to do more than just talk about it. Our guy Gabriel San Roman (check his story on new Nekromantix drummer Lux, from last week's Weekly, here) actually snagged one of the ever-elusive tickets to the service, and is going to provide some coverage for us right here on this very blog. Should be quite t

  • Follow the Michael Jackson Memorial Service on Twitter!

Hmm, I just paired the words "memorial service" with the word "Twitter" and an exclamation point. I guess I'm going to hell.Anyway, if watching the televised coverage of this morning's Michael Jackson memorial service at the Staples Center isn't enough for you (and why would it be? never enough dead MJ news!), your pals at Heard Mentality (that's us!) have it covered through a couple of different angles. Matt Fletcher, keyboard player for OC/LA band Satisfaction will be there, manning his trusty

  • Gabriel San Roman's Thoughts From Inside Michael Jackson's Memorial Service

Gabriel San RomanBY GABRIEL SAN ROMANIt's been 12 incomprehensible days since the shocking news that Michael Jackson died. Since that time, the prevailing feeling was that the immensity that is the King of Pop's musical legacy hadn't been properly or adequately paid tribute to...until today.I was one of the fortunate few to be awarded a gold bracelet and ticket to the Staples Center memorial service, out of the 1.6 million people who registered online. After spending less than 10 minutes yesterd

  • Five Questions with Lila Downs

BY GABRIEL SAN ROMANFor years, Lila Downs has melded her powerful multilingual vocals with musical arrangements that engagingly blend the sounds of our global village. Of mixed heritage herself, the signature syncretism that has come to define her artistic presentation has been most recently evidenced by the release in late June of the appropriately Spanglish titled anthology The Very Best of el Alma de Lila Downs. The Oaxaca-born singer's commanding range will be echoing through the Grove of

  • UPDATED! Outgoing: Lila Downs Cancels Grove of Anaheim Show, Charlatans UK Scrap Tour

Yesterday, we shared a delightful Q&A between our writer Gabriel San Roman and Mexican singing superstar Lila Downs, in anticipation of her show this Wednesday at the Grove of Anaheim--a show that's now not going to happen. Turns out, Downs had to get her appendix out over the weekend. (As someone with the experience of getting one out, it's really not nearly as fun as it sounds.)UPDATE: The Grove of Anaheim have announced a rescheduled date for the Lila Downs show; Sunday, October 25. • Hate Fighters Fight Each Other: CAIR vs. Brian Levin

Malik Ali, at UCI earlier this year...It was quite the heated, unexpected exchange today on KPFK-FM 90.7's Uprising morning programming (produced by Weekly contributor and Anaheim boy Gabriel San Roman) between two seeming allies. In one corner: Brian Levin, recent Best of OC profile subject and head of the Center for the Study of Hate and Extremism at Cal State San Bernardino. In the other corner: Munira Syeda, communications manager for the Los Angeles chapter of the Council on American-Isl
