Last Night: She & Him, Lavender Diamond at the House of Blues, Anaheim, Nov. 5, 2008.
Better Than: "The Happening," this summer's M. Night Shyamalan flick that co-starred Zooey Deschanel. But really, what isn't?
Download: The eminently likable "Why Do You Let Me Stay Here?" from She & Him's Volume One.
Though perhaps not yet a household name, Zooey Deschanel is most certainly A Movie Star, having appeared in films as diverse as "Elf" and "The Hitchhiker's Gui
The Time: Thanksgiving, 1976.
The Place: Winterland Ballroom, San Francisco.
The Occasion: The final concert by the original lineup of the Band, with a jaw-dropping number of guests (Bob Dylan, Eric Clapton, Muddy Waters, Neil Young, Joni Mitchell, Van Morrison, Ringo Starr, Dr. John, etc.), all of it preserved forever by Martin Scorsese's cameras in the greatest rock-doc of all time, The Last Waltz.
Ticket Price: A then-scandalous $25, but everybody got a free turkey dinner
Continuing our mini-theme this weekend of iconic singer/songwriters, let's turn to Bob Dylan. To his credit, he hasn't released any cheesy Christmas tunes in his near 50-year career, though the holiday comes up in tunes like "Arthur McBride" and both Christmas and Santa are mentioned in "Last Thoughts on Woody Guthrie." But if local musician Michael Ubaldini has taught me one thing after a 10 minute browse of his Myspace page, it is
People are saying "epic" a lot these days. Way too much. And not just in reference to the Faith No More song or ancient longform poems like Beowulf, for pretty much anything. A sandwich can be epic, or an episode of "The New Adventures of Old Christine." It's a real problem, one that probably started with the "epic fail" Internet meme, and now its unfortunately seeped its way into music, infiltrating the already sticky territory of genre classification:
Jamison Covington (left) and Parker CaseIt's not news that OC alternative rockers Faulter and JamisonParker are no longer producing music, but for those of you who followed these bands in the mid 2000's, you may be wondering what they're up to these days. Andy Carpenter, lead singer of Faulter, has moved away from the limelight and has gone to work as a producer. He has been working with Folk artist Molly Marlette. If you'd like to check Molly out, you're in luck... she is playing at The Gypsy L
