  • Obligatory Irish Music Post, Because it's Calendar-Appropriate

Hey, so I guess it's St. Patrick's Day. Yay?I've never been much for the holiday--I don't really see the point in an occasion when the only point is to drink, and yet it frequently falls on a weeknight. See also de Mayo, Cinco. Plus, there's unpleasant memories due to a St. Patrick's Day cover story I had to write two years ago at a different paper. So many shitty St. Patrick's Day events. Blarf. (It doesn't bother, me, though that it's basically a meaningless excuse to party--those are great, a

  • TODAY: New Dusty Rhodes and the River Band album in stores

After a couple months of pre-ordering, downloading, and file sharing, today you'll finally be able to do it old school and walk into a record store to cop the new album by Dusty Rhodes and the River Band. The  release of the band's sophomore effort, Palace and Stage, marks another chapter in the band's career on Side One Dummy Records. And as their bio/press release on the album points out, lyrics like "It's time to shine, this time it's mine" hint at a spangly, folk-rock tour de force on t

  • THIS WEEK: Nathen Maxwell and Jay Reatard Perform Back to Back at Fingerprints

You can call it a "creative departure" or use words like "progression" and "mature", but the bottom line is that all great music reaches a metamorphosis at some point. It could be subtle as a whisper or cataclysmic like a dirty bomb exploding under their entire musical foundation. Either way, you know it when you hear it.Starting tomorrow Fingerprints Record store presents another round of in-store performances featuring two artists who prepare to submit their own reinvented sounds to the mas
