Bear with us, gentle readers--this is a long post...
Though the Weekly anointed Orange Juice as the county's best blog, even the Juicers would admit that the king of the county blogosphere is OC Blog, started and administrated by Jubal, the nom de plume of political consultant and longtime local Republican activist Matt Cunningham. Its politics are unapologetically center-right--it says so on the banner. But we had no idea that OC Blog would also evolve into a mouthpiece for the pedo-priest pro
For decades, the Catholic Diocese of Orange has dealt with survivors of its pedo-priests in secrecy--sealed settlements, claimed ignorance, and always, always, away from a jury. In none of the civil settlements that the Orange diocese signed off on were there any admission of guilt by the priest or diocesan lay employee charged with molestation.
That's what makes the current strategy by longtime diocesan lawyer Peter Callahan so bizarre. Callahan has represented the Orange diocese on almost all
We've always tried really hard to like Jaime Soto, the auxiliary bishop in the Catholic Diocese of Orange who's leaving this weekend to become coadjutor bishop in the Diocese of Sacramento. He's a virtual Aztlanista on immigration, urges compassion for AIDS victims, and always sports a smile. But our admiration for Soto goes the way of church attendance every time we remember Soto's involvement in the Orange diocese sex-abuse scandal.
**Updated, with new material at the bottom...
...Is actually the dimwit from last month: Father Christopher Heath of St. Edward the Confessor in Dana Point. To mark Pope Benedict XVI's meeting with the sex-abuse victims of his priests, Heath wrote a post on his blog where he made this off-hand but telling remark:
It's a good story of healing and hope, but will never be enough for some who use this awful situation to justify their hatred for all things Catholic.
Chris: Have you learned nothing
Former Catholic Diocese of Stockton Bishop Donald Montrose died last week, and why should you care? Besides the fact he was the founding principal of Mater Dei High School, Montrose also unleashed Eleuterio Ramos upon Orange County parishes.
Ramos, of course, is the county's worst admitted priestly pedophile--he confessed to molesting "at least 25" boys." It didn't have to be this way: in 1975, Ramos was a priest at Resurrection Church in East Los Angeles when he molested a boy. Montrose was mo
We and supporters of sex-abuse victims celebrated loudly when Bishop Jaime Soto left the Diocese of Orange to become the eventual head bishop of the Diocese of Sacramento. Soto, while a staunch defender of immigrant rights, was an active member of the Orange diocese sex-abuse scandal cover-up. To quote just a small part of a previous Ex Cathedra post:
Soto's role, compared to other heavyweights in Orange, seems small. In 1986, he wrote a letter in support of Andrew Christian Anderson, one of on
Greatest-Religion-Reporter-Ever William Lobdell alerted me to the story of Diocese of Fresno Bishop John Steinbock removing Father Geoffrey Farrow from the diocese and his salary and health benefits for speaking out against the gay-marriage-banning Proposition 8 and coming out as a homosexual. That alone is a dick move, but Steinbock's rationale is stunning: in a letter to Farrow, His Excellency wrote “Your statement contradicted the teaching of the Catholic Church and has brought scandal to y
I'm getting disappointed with Diocese of Orange Bishop Tod D. Brown. As of recently, I've been reporting more on the kooky actions of former Orange bishops, whether it was homo-hating or homo-hypocrisy, than the current head of the county's Catholics. So it hurts me to report that the latest in Orange County Catholic idiocies again emanates from alumni--in this case Fresno Bishop John Steinbock and his $10,000 donation to the St. Luke's Institute.
St. Luke's is notorious as the place where the
What is it with the Orange County Board of Supervisors and their love of pedophile apologists? In 2006, Third District Supe Bill Campbell tried placing Monsignor John Urell, the right-hand man of Diocese of Orange bishops for a good decade of their sex-abuse scandal, on the county's human relations commission until molestation victims raised rightful holy hell. Now, an addendum to this Monday's BoS agenda currently lists Monsignor Lawrence Baird as giving the invocation at 9:30 in the morn.Baird
When I heard late that the United States Attorney's office is investigating Archdiocese of Los Angeles Cardinal Roger Mahony for his role in covering up the rapes committed by his priest, I attributed it to a hallucination brought on by last night's episode of Lost. But here's the Los Angeles Times story that proves it, and all I can say is: what about the Diocese of Orange?According to Times reporters Scott Glover and Jack Leonard, the feds are accusing Mahony and perhaps other L.A. Archdiocese
IUpdated, with new info on the bottom...Both the Los Angeles Times and Orange County Register revealed today that Jon Kirrer of Fountain Valley filed a lawsuit against the Catholic Diocese of Orange and its pedo-priest Denis Lyons alleging sexual abuse during the mid-1990s, and isn't it refreshing to know that Orange Bishop Tod D. Brown is up to his same tricks? Diocesan spinner Ryan Lilygren issued a statement to both papers that, "We intend to maintain the integrity of the judicial process and
Urell at the moment he went cuckooIn 1986, after the death of founding Diocese of Orange Bishop William Johnson, a young John Urell penned a moving tribute in the Los Angeles Times to the man whom set the diocese on its proud pedo-priest-protecting path. Urell--then the secretary to Johnson, now pastor at St. Timothy in Laguna Niguel, always comforter to the comforted--recalled how Johnson asked him to volunteer at a soup kitchen in Wilmington. "Bishop's point was that dignity must be restored a
Why is this man smiling?I wish I could say it is an April Fools' joke that the Orange County Hispanic Bar Association is going through with its reception for newly ordained Catholic Diocese of Orange Bishop Cirilo Flores despite him never quite getting around to denouncing or disciplining pedo-priests while serving on the diocese's clergy personnel board. At least the president-elect of the OC HBA, Carlos Colorado, has the guts to denounce the cover-up of the rapes of innocents, something that n
Yesterday, a Fresno jury acquitted the Catholic Diocese of Fresno of culpability in the priestly rapes of innocents, and does this news really surprise you given Fresno is Fresno? We really can't expect much intellectually and morally of this town, given its head padre is Bishop John Steinbock, former auxiliary bishop of the Orange diocese. On the witness stand, news accounts quote Steinbock as saying, "I never have returned anyone to ministry that I believe was guilty of sex abuse."HAHAHAHAHA!
See no evil, hear no evil...no evil!Blessed are the anonymous sources, for they bring justice to the little ones...Turns out newly ordained Diocese of Orange Bishop Cirilo Flores has a proud past of defending and condoning child abusers--and I'm not even talking about his treatment of numerous Orange diocese pedophile priests. Nearly 30 years ago, Flores was involved in investigating a nationally notorious child-abuse case in the Diocese of San Bernardino and not only did nothing about it, he ag
PillonYour Catholic Diocese of Orange made national headlines again earlier this week when former Catholic priest Ben Rodriguez filed a civil lawsuit in Orange County Superior Court alleging that Father Gordon Pillon molested him numerous times while Pillon served at La Habra's Our Lady of Guadalupe during the early 1980s. Pillon had already been removed from ministry by his most recent employer, the Diocese of Peoria, for this accusation and another one and currently teaches in Prague. What none
