  • Decoding the Times' cry for help

As R. Scott Moxley observes at the end of his dissection of Dana Parsons' attempt to slap a coat of whitewash on the lazy and error-filled reporting of the Haidl rape case Parsons has filled his L.A. Times column with, the Times has a new slogan for its Orange County advertising: Now More Than Ever. As Scott notes, it's a recycled slogan– Now More Than Ever was the slogan for Richard Nixon's 1972 reelection campaign. "The paper craves conservative readers," Scott explains. True, but I won

  • Massively Penetrating in Vegas

Looking for something new to do in Vegas? Something that involves breathing in massive amounts of particulate matter blown in from the desert? Something that involves watching yet another bit of idiotic Bush administration defense planning go up in smoke (literally)? Something a little mushroom cloudy? Well, you're in luck. Agence France-Presse reports that during the first week of June your tax dollars will be hard at work setting off a 700 ton explosion at the Nuclear Test Site just north of

  • Rummy "Slimy", Not "Slimmy"

While discussing his new book, Conservatives without Conscience, on Firedoglake's Book Salon, John Dean, who first gained fame as the most honest man in the Nixon White House (which admittedly is a little like being the best ice skater in the Sahara), reminisced about the role of a young Donald Rumsfeld in the administration of Yorba Linda's favorite son (and current leading roadside attraction). Long before he became the guiding light of our adventure in Iraq, Rummy was already showing signs o

  • Odds and Ends

Well, it was quite a weekend in Washington D.C. In a previous post, Alex did a fine job of spelling out the facts in the case of ex-Rep. Mark Foley (R-Predator). The only thing that can be added is that Foley has now headed down a familiar path-- as Josh Marshall puts it: "Ahhh, once again, the last refuge of the disgraced House Republican: rehab." Foley's checked himself into rehab for alcoholism, perhaps in preparation for blaming his personal demons on the Demon Rum. (Is it a Church of S

  • Does a Bear Shit in the LA Times?

If you read Monday's Los Angeles "By God" Times Business section (and why would you?), you might've choked on your French Roast when you came on C3's three-quarter page advert announcing the California Bear is missing from the state flag. The gloomy gray gus informed that the Grizzly "grew tired of special elections and old promises," that it "went into hibernation waiting for progress to alleviate high taxes and high business costs," that "changes were too few and too slow." Make no mistake, B
