Okay, Newport's fine, but there must be Satanic snowballs somewhere. Today, the Transportation Corridor Agencies announced a 30-day delay on their choice of alignments for the Foothill-South toll road extension. The TCA board voted 12-3 for the delay mere hours after its staff received a letter from Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger's "top resources and transportation advisors," according to the San Diego Union Tribune. Secretary of the California Resources Agency Mike Chrisman and Secretary of the
Our R. Scott Moxley reports that, by the end of the night at the Hyatt Regency Irvine, the older Republicans in the room showed on their faces exactly what they felt: worry, frustration, indignation. But the Young Republican types in their 20s and 30s were not missing a beat--or a drop of hooch--as they had a ball like it was any other chance to party.
By the way, Moxley--who has been covering these GOP monster truck pulls since 1994--would like to readjust his crowd figures. In an earlier post
... and I'm soooooo confused. I was out of town last Thursday through Sunday, and when I returned there were 17 messages on my phone from the likes of Pete Wilson, Dick Ackerman, Hillary Clinton, someone yammering about Jessica's Law, the Nguyen running for an OC school board seat and his partner in crime David Boyd, Wendy Leece (Costa Mesa City Council), Ben Stein, Alan Mansoor (Costa Mesa CC), sheriff's lieutenant Ron Cunningham (from which sheriff's agency, Lordy knows), "Don't Call Me" Shirl
As of half-past seven Monday night, Lou Correa has over 50% of the vote, beating opponent Lynn Daucher by 1,302 votes and winning California's 34th Senate seat. He collected more votes than opponents Daucher and Otto Bade combined, ending speculation that Bade's last-minute write-in campaign is what cost Daucher the election. Can we please stop calling him Otto the Spoiler now?
This is an unpleasant turn of events for Daucher, who on Election Night was claiming victory. At the Republican's ill-
There's tension inside the world's smallest big tent.
Following the lead of their fellow Republicans in the Assembly-- who bounced alleged Schwarzenegger-appeaser George Plescia out of his position as leader of the Assembly's GOP, and replaced him with the allegedly unbending Mike Villines-- the rightwing of the rightwing in Senate has its knives out for that chamber's top Republican leader, Tustin's Dick Ackerman.
John Howard reports in the Capitol Weekly,
A closed-door retreat in Newport Beach
At the end of last week, it appeared that OC's Dick Ackerman was about to lose his position as Minority Leader in the State Senate. He stood accused by many of his fellow Republicans of being too ready to cut deals with Governor Schwarzenegger and too pro-infrastructure bonds. Sure, voters had already approved the bonds and seem to overwhelming approve of the latest version of Schwarzenegger (the deal-making, semi-Democrat model), but Senate Republicans didn't appear to care. After all, the C
A variety of stories lurching forward this morning…
It looks like the most special of all special elections is finally over, and Janet Nguyen is the new First District Supervisor, winning by a total of 3 votes. Superior Court Judge Michael Brenner rejected Trung Nguyen's claim that the election's recount was performed in an illegal manner. The winning Nguyen is scheduled to be sworn in tomorrow at the Board of Supes weekly meeting. There are dark rumblings that th
There were two HUUUUGE mistakes in the virtual droolings below. First, in KEN CALVERT'S MOD SQUAD, we reported that OC Blog has always been behind state Senator John Campbell (R-Richy Richland) from the beginning of his quest for the 48th Congressional District seat. A close follower of Clockwork and OC Blog informed us that OC Blog first supported Assemblyman Dick Ackerman (R-Notso Welloffville), going so far as to brand Campbell as something of a Calvertesque Commie up until Ackerman dropped o
State Senator Dick Ackerman is as conservative as they come, and must no doubt be thrilled that ICE raids in OC are now as common as sunny days. But his thinking on a proposal by Los Angeles-area State Senator Gil Cedillo to require that California schools teach kiddies about the illegal roundups of Mexican-Americans during the 1930s is spot-on. Ackerman told La Opinión (who knew he spoke Spanish?) that "Aquí hay mucha gente que piensa que cualquier asunto particular es muy importante y quiere
Tinker Bell Plot: Reporter Dave McKibben visits the turf war in Anaheim and discovers “The Disney-supported initiative, which supporters say has gathered enough signatures for the ballot, seeks to bar new housing in the resort district unless voters approve it. [But the] measure wouldn't require voter approval for Disney's commercial ventures.” That's evenhanded in a Tinker Bell sort of way. Disney folks want to block SunCal's 1,500-residential-unit plans across the street from their third
The last hints of Republican opposition to pay a Latino man wrongfully imprisoned for a robbery/carjacking he did not commit disappeared this week in the California legislature after Assemblyman Todd Spitzer (R-Orange) called on his colleagues to do the right thing.
“As a society we have a responsibility to make that [injustice] right,” Spitzer (pictured) said in an August 18 floor speech regarding a proposed and legally sanctioned $100-per-day fee to Ochoa for time spent locked in prison

Measure R on the Irvine ballot asks residents to approve what a great job the Irvine City Council is doing on planning the Great Park on the old El Toro Marine Corps base (or if the measure loses, one supposes, what a piss-poor job they are doing). The conflict-of-interest-laden gusher of money flowing into the campaign for the measure has been examined here and here and to a much more comprehensive extent here and for the must-read historical perspective, righ
Whoa! They're moving the Sydney Opera House to Anaheim!Oh wait, no. That's the newly approved design for the Anaheim Regional Transportation Intermodal Center, a.k.a. ARTIC.On Tuesday, the Anaheim City Council awarded architecture firm Parsons Brinckerhoff/HOK with the contract to design and lay the groundwork for ARTIC, a regional transportation hub that's been more than 15 years in the making. The dollar total for the job could reach $24.3 million. According to the Register, Parsons Brinckerho
"Open Mike" DuvallA day after the Assembly Ethics Committee and Assembly Speaker Karen Bass announced they will not go after disgraced former Assemblyman Mike Duvall, California Attorney General Jerry Brown revealed today he doesn't plan to investigate the Yorba Linda Republican either. In other Duvall news, five candidates have reportedly qualified to run in a November special election for the Assembly seat he vacated.
Linda Ackerman uses Dick to rub NorbyIt's potentially the most lethal weapon in Linda Ackerman's campaign to defeat Republican county Supervisor Chris Norby for Mike Duvall's open state Assembly seat: sexual misconduct innuendo. The reason is simple. Duvall resigned in September after the Weekly and KCAL revealed that the self-styled Christian conservative and vice chairman of the Assembly utilities committee had bragged about having sloppy sex with two Sacramento-based lobbyists--one of whom

Mike Duvall spread more than the word of GodUntil recently, Irvine-based Republican fundraiser Desiree Mouzoon prominently listed a testimonial on her business website from Mike Duvall. Why not? Until recently, Duvall had been an Orange County state assemblyman who served as vice chairman of a powerful legislative utilities committee and worked in the California GOP's leadership. But in September a joint KCBS/OC Weekly probe uncovered that Duvall--a married, self-described Christian conserva
Harkey's ethical challenges produced recall calls. Assemblywoman Diane Harkey (R-Dana Point) has endorsed Linda Ackerman to fill the vacancy left by ex-Assemblyman Mike Duvall, who resigned in disgrace quickly after the Weekly's R. Scott Moxley and KCAL/KCBS reporter Dave Lopez exposed the Yorba Linda Republican morality cop and married father of two bragging about banging female lobbyists. Not only did at least one lobbyist have business before Duvall's panels, he sat on the Assembly
