The Pity Party (photo by ionnehendrix)
The Pity Party are in mid-set as I arrive at Detroit Bar, projecting an LA-hipster refraction of the White Stripes—on first impression. But female drummer/vocalist/keyboardist Heisenflei and guitarist/vocalist Maurice-Robert quickly quash that knee-jerk reaction with an approach to rock that's far less trad than Jack and Meg's. The Pity Party's rhythms are fairly primitive (and totally righteous), but the guitar is art-damaged in a way that reminds me o
Jonas Brothers at The Honda Center on July 13, 2008

Better Than: Three hours at Chuck E. Cheese trying to burn through 100 tokens.
If the Jonas Brothers' parents weren't constantly circling their superstar sons, we're pretty sure they could get all the second-base action for which their little hormone-filled hearts could lust. Never have I seen such zealous teenage girls—not even myself circa 1989 when Depeche Mode filmed 101 at the Rose Bowl.
But this was sold out,
I hate saying anyone is my favorite and/or the best local band because inevitably I will leave someone out, which makes me seem like a jerk. I do enough of that already, so I'll just say that Long Beach's On Blast are near the top of that list. The quartet plays tomorrow night at the Continental Room in Fullerton. I've had a copy of their as-yet unreleased record for a few months now and I think it's great. Even better is seeing them live because they've got some mighty fine-looking fans and that
This was announced kinda quietly over the weekend, but in case you haven't heard: Depeche Mode is coming to the Honda Center in Anaheim on August 19. It's the latest addition to their tour behind Sounds of the Universe, their 12th (!) full-length (and first since 2005's Playing the Angel), out on April 21. They've already got Hollywood Bowl performances scheduled on August 16 and 17. There's various pre-sales going on, and it's on sale to the general public a week from today, March 30, at 10 a.m
Like tunes? Love British people? Then you must be so psyched right now, with these three new music releases out this week. There's Art Brut's third album, Art Brut vs. Satan, which is at this point the only one I've heard all the way through (though I'm planning on remedying that soon!). There's a lot of talk that it's a "return to form" to the glory days of Bang Bang Rock and Roll, but I dunno, I thought It's a Bit Complicated was pretty cool, too ("di-rect hit! di-rect hit!"). This one is (unsu
Sorry, classic rock fans. Steven Tyler falling off the stage in a much-publicized incident at a concert last week in Sturgis, South Dakota means that Aerosmith has to cancel the remainder of their summer tour with ZZ Top. Logically, this includes the Verizon Wireless Amphitheater in Irvine date scheduled for August 23. Ticket refunds are available at the point of purchase. In cheerier news, despite Depeche Mode canceling shows including tonight's at the Cricket Wireless Amphitheater in Chula V
Andrew YoussefLast Night: Depeche Mode, Peter Bjorn and John at the Honda Center, Anaheim; August 19, 2009.Better Than: Staying in and watching Octomom: The Incredible Unseen Footage, a two-hour "special," on Fox. Words fail me.Music for the Masses: Not only was it a sell-out crowd, but it was a fantastic mix of ages and ethnicities (Hispanic, Asian, Brits, Americans, Germans, French). Some came alone. Some came in couples. Some came to dance. Some came to get totally off their face. Some cam
