  • Wednesday's Headlines & Surprises: An OC Blog Coward

What did the OC billionaire do when the wife was away? Computer-chip magnate Henry T. Nicholas III won big in a 1998 public stock offering for his Broadcom Corp., and to celebrate, he built an extravagant $30 million underground “personal brothel” at his Laguna Hills estate. That's according to the latest allegations discovered by E. Scott Reckard and Kim Christensen, two Los Angeles Times reporters who dug up court documents containing the dirt. Last week, newspapers disclosed FBI interes

  • Tuesday's Headlines

Big Google's watching you, OC: Adios, privacy. Google's added a "street view" function to Google Maps that has LA covered, as well as bits of the following parts of OC: Anaheim, Newport Beach, Huntington Beach and Laguna Niguel. Long Beach is on it, too. No deal, Disney: Talks have reportedly ended between Disney officials and the developer that wants to build cheap housing by the Mouse's ritzy resort — but no settlement was made. Grab your robes, H.B.: The Huntington Beach City Council voted

  • Rohrabacher Going Down To Defeat in November?

After pondering a posting tonight at theliberaloc.com by Gila Jones, I'm guessing that Orange County Republican pollsters have worrisome data that raises concerns about the safety of Congressman Dana Rohrabacher's re-election chances in November. An enigma wrapped in lies, a temper, quixotic brain functions, shameless self-promotion, questionable personal habits, margarita breath and a dress code likely suggested by a well-meaning but drunk Frank Mickadeit, Rohrabacher is, by any reasonable me

  • Sic Semper Schroeder

Is Mike Schroeder a bad lawyer? Or just a bad liar? R. Scott Moxley recently announced Schroeder’s hackneyed effort to kneecap Huntington Beach Mayor Debbie Cook’s election challenge to Congressman Dana Rohrabacher (R-Islamabad). It seems Schroeder took issue with Cook’s reference to herself on the ballot as “Mayor” because she was appointed by representatives. At the time, we had no idea just how hackneyed the effort was. In the marvelous words of the court document, prepared by Judg

  • Cooking

Politicker's Alex Isenstadt reports that Huntington Beach Mayor Debbie Cook outraised incumbent Congressman Dana Rohrabacher (R-Huntington Beach) in the second quarter. Fundraising reports show Cook took in $92,990 between April and June to Rohrabacher's $78,712 over the same period. However, Cook had only $97,392 in cash on hand at the close of the reporting period to Rohrabacher's $387,950.

  • Once Term Limits Champ, Rohrabacher Wants 11th Term in D.C.

Early in his political career, Dana Rohrabacher hailed himself as a term-limits champion for federal politicians and spoke passionately about the inherent evils of one person staying in power for an extended period of time. Fast-forward 20 years: Rohrabacher, the conservative Republican seeking an eleventh term in Washington, D.C., is now mute on term limits. Several election cycles ago—when the congressman still spoke to (okay, yelled at) me, I asked him for an explanation for his change

  • Democrats Proudly Wear the Union Label

Above the “Teamsters Local 952 Orange County and Vicinity” logo on the wall behind the speaker’s podium at the Orange union hall on Marks Way is the image of two horse heads. Instead of suggesting that represents the calling card of some syndicates that have been known to associate with labor, let us instead point out that those should have been donkey heads on Friday as Progressive Democrats of America (PDA) and the local labor movement joined forces to shore up the “down slate” cand

Ya wanna know why the California Coalition for Immigration Reform are evil, decrepit hypocrites? Because they're hosting Congressman Dana Rohrabacher (R-Taliban) this Wednesday at their monthly Klavern at the Garden Grove Woman's Club on the corner of Gilbert and Garden Grove Blvd (starts at 7:30 pm; admission $5 for non-CCIR members). From the keyboard of CCIR head Barbara Coe: The courageous patriot Representative who always stands strong for the rights of loyal, law-abiding Americans of ever

  • Mackerel Flats' Folks Leaning Toward Obama? Who Knew?

Around 11 this morning, KPCC 89.3 FM's AirTalk show presented a call-in segment called "I Didn't Know My Neighbor Was Voting For (Fill In The Blank)!" Host Larry Mantle wanted to know whether anyone's neighbors put political signs on their front lawns that surprised the listener. First caller Garrett of Newport Beach said he is seeing a lot more Obama for President signs in front of houses in his neighborhood (including his own) than he would have expected in the heart of conservative Orange C

  • Where Will Surfin' Congressman Stand on Long Beach Breakwater?

The surfin' congressman. As Louis Sahagun blogged on the LA Times' L.A. Now, Long Beach has released the long-awaited results of a study aimed at reconfiguring the breakwater to create bigger waves, cleaner water and beaches, and more surf tourism. According to the study, the city could gain $52 million a year in local spending--and $7 million annually in taxes and fees. The engineering firm Moffat & Nichol is scheduled to present details of the $100,000 report to the Long
