Baroness and The Red Chord

Showcase Theatre
Better Than: Whatever tribute bands were playing in Orange County last night. Which isn’t saying much, but then again, I did have to drive to Riverside to find a decent show.

Ahh, the Showcase Theatre. I hadn't been there in almost seven years. The Showcase was the club that I started going to shows at when I was in high school, back then they had all the best p

Death By Stereo

Better than: Any band whose name contains the word "Death" in it — even the veteran metal band Death themselves.
Download: "Entombed We Collide" video.
One can never even remotely predict what might happen at any given Death By Stereo show. Case in point: Over the past decade, yours truly has witnessed vocalist Efrem Schulz zip up zippers of jacket-wearing audience members, throw his mic in the
Hungover from Super Bowl Sunday? Us too. (Yes, even those of us who aren't the biggest football nuts by a long shot. . .but when stranded in SFO waiting to head back to John Wayne, there aren't too many entertainment options.) Anyway, we obviously didn't go hog wild on Super Bowl coverage around here, but our sister paper, the Phoenix New Times, sure did. They even built this nifty blog thing. Looking for the OC-Super Bowl connection? Try this cute but woefully mediocre singer-songwriter from Mi
Last night marked the final weekend for Bad Religion's relentless assault on the Anaheim House of Blues.
Since February 29, the elder statesmen of Los Angeles punk have embarked on a blistering "World Tour of Southern California" packing in sweaty, fanatical fans night after night. Los Angeles, San Diego and Vegas HOB's have also been in on the action. With the support of brutal thrashers Death By Stereo and fresh faced beach punkers The Darlings, the energy on stage created enough spark in Do

Last Night: Liskfest at Oak Canyon Ranch in Irvine on October 11,2008
Better Than: seeing a festival in the middle of summer.
Download: "Oi, To The World!" by the Vandals from their Myspace page
Hope, change, and unity were used as themes in hardcore music long before the current political candidates incorporated these ideas into their campaigns. A sense of community united the Liskfest as it was snatched from the jaws of cancellation by some last minutes investors. It was a picture per
Better Than: Pretty much any other concert you could have gone to last night. In the canon of legendary punk bands, it is pretty much impossible to fuck with the furious, dred-wielding four piece that is Bad Brains. And for hoards of die-hard O.C. punks young and old, a chance to see them in action for the first time in god knows how long was an early Christmas gift. At the very least, it was a gift big enough to make fans forget that we were at Disneyland for 2 solid hours.Monday night's Bad Br
I'll have some more thoughts on the more, uh, interesting choices made by the academy (which I am not a part of, despite what their Web site says) a little later, but for now here's the full list of nominees, unedited from the OC Music Awards press release.
Everyone I've talked to about the OC Music Awards nominee list, released yesterday, seems to have the same reaction: Huh? Why are young, unsigned bands like The Jakes competing against veteran, internationally known acts like The Offspring, who had Billboard's #1 Hot Modern Rock Track for 11 weeks last year?
Tonight's weekly Wednesday Busy Work night at Detroit Bar has a special guest DJ, and it's a big one: Efrem Schulz, the frontman and only remaining original member of veteran Orange County punk rockers Death By Stereo, will be playing tunes along with the night's regular crop of resident DJs (Dan Sena, Clifford Liddell and G-Mo & Rockberry). You wouldn't expect the lead singer of Death by Stereo to be into the typical hipster dance tunes you hear during these nights, but who knows what he ha
Lisa JohnsonLast month, we shared some initial Liskfest acts--As I Lay Dying, H2O and Death By Stereo among them. Now, some more names have been "leaked" as play the second annual metal/hardcore festival on September 5 at Oak Canyon Ranch in Irvine. And they're big ones.
Last October, Liskfest debuted in Orange County, with bands like Death By Stereo (pictured), Strung Out, the Vandals and Gorilla Biscuits playing a hardcore/metal festival in Oak Canyon Ranch founded by Affliction global marketing director Chris Lisk. And guess what? It's happening again!Same Irvine location, but this time it'll be on September 5. Here is our slideshow from last year's festival, and here is Andrew Youssef's review. Click after the jump for a full list of bands confirmed thus far
A full meal of punk/hardcore/metal is getting underway right now at Oak Canyon Ranch in Irvine: the second annual Liskfest, headlined by As I Lay Dying, and featuring acts like Death By Stereo (pictured), H20, All Shall Perish, Sleeping Giant and more. Tickets are $30. Lineup and set times after the jump!Another all-day festival--FYF Fest--takes place today in an obscure city about 30 miles to the north. More information on that here.
