  • Pinot Provence Offers Affordable Appetizers Ahora

To be honest, I can't remember the last time I visited Pinot Provence, the venerable French restaurant run by the Patina Group. I've been to its home base, the Westin Hotel, quite a few times (the bar and banquet area, not the rooms since college), but never bother with Pinot because the prices are a bit much, and I'll go to A Taste of France if I'm in the mood for affordable françois. All this might change today, as Pinot gets with the times and is now offering an affordable, seemingly delicio

  • The First Time I've Never Left a Tip: Zipangu

I used to like eating at Zipangu at the LAB in Costa Mesa. Yeah, it's sushi for hipsters, but I rather enjoyed their fusion rolls, loved the happy hour specials, and cracked up every time I saw some gabacho fall to the Asian persuasion. Gee, gaijin: when did you stop stealing our women? But I'm not returning. I committed the grossest of dining faux pas, one worse than licking your plate in public: I didn't leave a tip. But it was warranted: after finishing my meal (which I received rather quickly

  • TODAY: Will Crum Plays in Wendy's Parking Lot!

Our good friend Ashley Eliot comes to us with this hot tip: Orange County folkster Will Crum is playing a show today at 3 p.m. in the parking lot of Wendy's on 468 E. 17th St. in Costa Mesa. You read that right. She also tells me that at 1 p.m. today, The Makeout Party, Audacity, My Pet Saddle and AM played a show in the Dee Lux parking lot, also in Costa Mesa. Parking lot jams: the hot new thing in '09!UPDATE: I guess it's going on now (like 4:30 p.m.), about an hour and a half late.UPDATE #2:

  • Wahoo's Fish Tacos Turns Twenty-Years-Old

Twenty years. That's how long Wahoo's Fish Tacos has been in business. When surfer dudes Wing Lam, Ed Lee and Mingo Lee opened their first Wahoo's in Costa Mesa, the original Batman with Nicholson as the Joker was the big movie. The Simpsons were still on Tracey Ullman. And me? Well, I was still in middle school, without a clue what a fish taco was, let alone that there was a pioneering place called Wahoo's serving them.It wasn't until years later, when they'd already opened their other Cost

  • Incoming: Autolux at Detroit Bar, April 2

LA shoegazers Autolux are coming to Detroit Bar in Costa Mesa on April 2, with $15 tickets going on sale this Friday (2/20) at 10 a.m. The band caught praise in 2004--including an 8.3 from Pitchfork Media--with the release of their first full-length album, Future Perfect. They haven't released much since then (or, other than one single last year...anything), but they've remained active and plan on releasing a second record "sometime" this year. You can pressure them about it in just a few weeks!

  • Who Amongst You Has Experienced the TK Burgers Truck?

Not me. But its quality is something I wonder about every time I pass by the OC steamed hams icon. I've seen the Carl's Jr. truck in action, eaten at an In-n-Out version, and virtually live at taco truck. But I've only seen the TK truck in person at their Costa Mesa location, loading up to service some weekend party no doubted hosted by smart folks. However the experience is, I'm sure the burgers remain as delicious as at their brick-and-mortar locations: egg bun, sweet meat, with a special sauc

  • Japanophiles Rejoice! Mitsuwa's Upcoming 20th Anniversary

Head down to Mitsuwa Marketplace from Friday March 27 to Monday March 30 for some bargains as the complex celebrates 20 years in Costa Mesa. There'll be special offers, promotions, special dishes and, for the first 5,000 customers (!), an eco-friendly shopping bag. Fans of Miyazaki Wagyu beef take note, too: steak and BBQ beef will be on sale at "amazing prices". But it's in limited quantities, so get there quick.Regular hours are in operation during the fair--that's 9am to 7.30pm for the restaur

  • Hamamori Slashes Its Omakase Prices...AGAIN!

Not more than a day after I wrote about my return visit to Hamamori to try their discounted omakase menu, they went and discounted it again! The $48 5-course omakase meal I enjoyed a week prior is now marked down to $45.  And what used to be the $90 7-course omakase is now $69!  But wait, there's more!  They're doing 50% sashimi specials every night until the entire stock is sold out!  If there was a better indicator on how bad the economy is doing, I don't know it. As I no

  • French 75 in Fashion Island Sold Off

The blood-letting at the once mighty Culinary Adventures continues. March 31st was the last supper for Savannah in Costa Mesa. Now, according to The Daily Pilot, the restaurant group has sold off their French 75 at Fashion Island to a "well known Orange County restaurateur". The article continues to say that "French 75 will continue as a French brasserie, but the sign on the front and the chef in the back should be different by the end of the month."

  • TODAY: Last Show for Trashed at the Camp

For the last little bit, non-profit group Global Inheritance has set up shop at hippie-riffic shopping center the Camp in Costa Mesa in the form of TRASHed, putting on shows each Sunday as they "push for social and environmental change." Today's their last show, as everything planned for June has been scrapped. So they're going out with the bay area's Blank Tapes (pictured), Big Whup, Land 'n Sea and D.A. Humphrey of the Flying Saucers. Things start at 7, and it's $5 or 10 cans of food.

Costa Mesa dancey-electro trio Pop Noir will be opening up for noted English indie rockers Doves (also a trio! weird!) during two of their southern California dates this week--Thursday at the House of Blues in San Diego, and Friday right here (well, "here," relatively speaking) at the House of Blues in Anaheim.

  • Slideshows: Chris Cornell, Black Lips, DJ Roam

Another busy weekend has come and gone at OC Weeklyville, and we've got pictures from shows this past Friday, Saturday and Sunday. Friday, our old friend Leslie Agan was at the Crosby in downtown Santa Ana, taking some pics of DJ Roam. Chris Cornell's recent solo efforts have received a bit of a mixed reaction, but that didn't stop Chris Victorio from shooting some images of the former Soundgarden/Audioslave lead singer (pictured) on Saturday at the House of Blues in Anaheim. Sunday? Why, Andrew

  • ALSO TONIGHT: Brimstone Howl at Avalon Bar in Costa Mesa

DJ Oldboy usually brings a band with him to his regular Thursday night gigs at Avalon in Costa Mesa, but typically someone from the local scene. Tonight, it's Omaha blues-rockers Brimstone Howl, one of Oldboy's personal favorite bands. As he says, "Shit like this never happens to me, but I guess pushing yourself and diggin' through the trenches gets you somewhere." Apparently, they're going to be recording at The Distillery Studio in Costa Mesa soon, so it's sort of a "welcome to OC for a little

In the past six months Costa Mesa's Japanese Motors have played CMJ, SXSW and toured the country with Modest Mouse, but tonight they're back in their hometown, playing a gig at the cozy Avalon Bar. They're on the radio on Sirius XM, they've been covered by Pitchfork, etc., etc.--the point is that the place will probably be packed (it's not a very big place!) and it's a neat opportunity to see a hometown band in an intimate setting, an opportunity that may not happen much more if their career kee

The Charlatans UK--or, as they're known in the rest of the non-America world, The Charlatans--have been one of the most prolific and endearing Britpop bands of the last two decades. While plenty of their peers have broken up or faded away, the Charlatans have remained constant, despite ebbs and flows of popularity and the 1996 death of original keyboardist Rob Collins. They released their 10th album, You Cross My Path, last year on UK's hip Cooking Vinyl record, and are now launching a US tour th

Yeah, you read that right, the STANK is coming. In a move that may spark many more shows like it in the future, guitar-driven alt rockers Hoobastank are coming to Costa Mesa with a toned down acoustic set at Sutra as the kick-off band to the club's summer concert series. It's an event that promises a new take on band's semi-evolving sound as well as the opportunity for a penetrating Q&A session with the band between songs. Finally, all the burning Hoobastank questions you've been holding ont

  • KOCI Nears One-Year Anniversary

Back in February, I visited KOCI, the low-power FM station broadcasting out of Costa Mesa. The resulting story was here, and basically, even though the episode of their "Backstage Pass" local music show I witnessed was rather awkward--with woefully miscast host "Dr. Barry" trying, and failing, to relate to band members much younger than him--it seemed like the station had some great potential, and that they're worth rooting for.So, happily, they've reached out to tell us that they're celebratin

  • TONIGHT: Love Your Mother and DJ Old Boy at Avalon

Now there's something you don't see every day, marshmallow monsters advertising rock bands. But gazing up at this delicious-looking flier, I'm quickly reminded of how the unabashed live presence of DJ Old Boy and Costa Mesa rock band Love Your Mother might have something in common with the monstrous Stay Puft Marshmallow Man from Ghost Busters. Sometimes things that seem the most harmless to us can be the most dangerous. Like the cute, cuddly marshmallow man, phrases like "Love Your Mother" or "

Costa Mesa-by-way-of-Malaysia singer-songwriter Zee Avi first netted attention through YouTube videos of her performances, some of which have racked up more than 800,000 views. Now she's on Brushfire records and touring the country with Pete Yorn, but she hasn't abandoned her .flv file roots, thus this new video of her and her bandmates covering "I Fought the Law" during a spare moment on the tour. It's tough to find a nice outdoor patio complete with a quiet ambiance (and a variety of booze) in this neighborhood. But wouldn't you know it, we found one right near our office at Habana in Costa Mesa! Nestled behind the oh-so-fabulous Buffalo Exchange at posh anti-mall, The Lab, Habana is home to classic Cuban cuisine and one heck of a sangria (the recipe of which was not made available to me but surely includes wine, fruit and other tasty goodies). While a pitcher of either the white or red w

  • 'nother Wu Member Coming to Detroit

Somehow Costa Mesa's Detroit Bar has become the local spot for any of the 37 dudes in the Wu-Tang Clan to perform solo. Next on the list (after two recent shows by the GZA) is Cappadonna, who might be a member of a contributor, depending on how you define those things. All I know is, he's more of a member than I am and that's good enough for me. The show is June 13. Tickets are $15. On sale now.
