Last Night: The Shys, Army Navy and Vast Atlantic at Detroit Bar in Costa Mesa, Oct. 11, 2008.
Better Than: Listening to "Too Shy" by Kajagoogoo on repeat.
Download: Army Navy's self-titled debut LP, in stores Tuesday but on iTunes now.
Playing their last southern California show before heading east later this month, San Clemente's The Shys delivered their brand of garage rock to the Detroit Bar Saturday - but with only a 35-minute set, it was more of a scrimmage than opening day kickoff.
The seventh night of the weekly OC Music Awards showcases brings another change of venue: eVocal in Costa Mesa. Tonight's lineup includes headliners Hong Kong Six, Poor Richards Press, Sarah Green and Cory Case. Oh, and the shows are no cover again, after being $10 the last couple of weeks at Chain Reaction--the perfect price for a Tuesday evening of entertainment in our current economic climate (yay for the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act being signed into law! who's psyched for some rec
The OC Music Awards showcases did things acoustic-style last night, with their first of two shows from Costa Mesa's eVocal. Cory Case, Sarah Green, Poor Richards Press and Hong Kong Six all performed, and our guy Keith May was there taking pictures. Ch-check 'em out. The showcases return to eVocal next Tuesday, with performances from The New Limb, Daniel Morones, Francisco the Man! and Yellow Red Sparks.
Sure, I may be a bit rough on the OC Music Awards at times (or, uh, lots of the time), but the lineups for their "best acoustic live showcase finals" and "best live band showcase finals" are definitely solid, including some of our favorite Locals Only bands, like the New Limb (pictured). For each of the ten OCMA showcases, three judges--longtime local music supporter Tazy Phyllipz, KUCI's Ashley Eliot, and Yelp's Hazel Quimpo--rated the performers on a byzantine number of categories, and this is
The performers for this year's OC Music Awards, happening April 4 at the Grove of Anaheim, have been announced--well, the ones that can be announced, anyway. If you know who these fashionable folks in this black and white pic are, you probably can guess one of them!
The OC Music Awards are now a week (OK, eight days) away, and their speeding towards April 4 at the Grove of Anaheim with their "best acoustic" and oddly broad "best live band" finals tonight and tomorrow.Melanoid, Yellow Red Sparks, AJ Degrasse, Cory Case and Hong Kong Six (pictured) will be acoustically battling it out tonight at the Gypsy Den in Santa Ana; tomorrow, Venus Infers, The New Limb, The Jakes, The Union Line and The Living Suns will square off for the lofty title of "best live band
After plenty of talk--good and otherwise--here about the event, the OC Music Awards finally happen Saturday at the Grove of Anaheim. Performers include Japanese Motors (pictured), Venus Infers, Mickey Avalon, The Union Line, Cory Case, Humanlab and Aushua--but even more exciting is the fact that yours truly is presenting. Either best pop or best live acoustic; it seems to be in flux. OC Weekly is reprsenting in a big way, as Gustavo Arellano is also presenting (best latin, who knew?). Big things
Venus Infers, a band we've (along with just about everyone else, it seems) been singing the praises of for a while, were the big winners Saturday at the OC Music Awards, picking up the victory in three categories--best indie, best alternative (not sure how those two are defined, but OK) and best album for The Truth About Venus Infers. A veritable OC Music Award hat trick! The event itself, at the Grove of Anaheim, went off well, with a professional air and just generally felt like a big deal and
Jack ColemanTazy Phyllipz is known for a couple of things--having more "Zs" in his name than most this side of Eastern Europe, and for spending many years promoting the Orange County music scene. He hasn't slowed down, and is now booking showcases at Slidebar in Fullerton. One such is tonight: a free one from Cory Case (pictured, the winner of "best live acoustic" at the OC Music Awards this year), Stacy Clark, Faded Paper Figures, Melanoid and Venus Infers. Faded Paper Figures--some of them, at
Keith MayYou weren't at Detroit Bar last night? Oh, that's a shame. You missed out on some fun: balloons, crowns, birthday cake, The New Limb (whose Lauren Salamone is pictured here), Stacy Clark, a cameo from Cory Case, LA's Civalias, and, it's rumored, a certain alt-weekly music editor may have even been on stage at some point. Maybe. If you would like to peek into this glorious world for just a few fleeting seconds, check out Keith May's slideshow from last night here.
Happy 4th of July, duders! We've got the set times for today's "Freedom Creative Arts Fest" at eVocal in Costa Mesa, the venue's second-to-last show. Click on the jump!
Iglu & Hartly, pictured, are from LA (the inimitable Echo Park, specifically), but they play in Orange County a lot. They've played Detroit Bar twice already this year, and return there next Friday, July 24. And they're playing at the District in Tustin Legacy shopping center this Sunday, as part of the "District Unplugged," an all-acoustic event in part benefiting the Surfrider Foundation. They must really like it here. And yes, acoustic Iglu & Hartly. We're scared, too. Also playing: De
Pretty much every city in Orange County has a giant shopping center (some have multiple ones!), so we might as well make good use out of them, right? Case in point, the District Unplugged event that we told you about earlier in the week...it's going on right now at the sprawling District at Tustin Legacy.
We've been following the story of eVocal's untimely closing all this week, and now we have some more information on what looks to be the Costa Mesa all-ages venue's second-to-last show. Dubbed "Freedom Fest," festivities are planned to go for a full 12 hours--from noon to midnight--with back-to-back local acts playing inside, and acoustic artists playing short sets in between while bands set up. Next door neighbor Avalon is also getting in on the fun, with DJs spinning (with records, not like, o
