It's not quite what you expect to see at the beach. A circle of 25 big black boxes, each 8 feet by 8 feet, with impromptu "boardwalks" inside and outside the perimeter, though passers-by can certainly walk in the sand if they choose. Embedded in the boxes are photos depicting frozen moments in extreme-sports action, approximately 4 feet by 6 feet, two for each box. After the sun goes down, and some preliminary words are uttered by a man with a microphone (at least 50 percent of which are inaudib
Last night, I went to the Jane magazine/Rimmel Cosmetics party at the Beauty Bar in LA. Just because it was a Tuesday didn’t stop me from going out. I know our beloved Orange County can rock midweek, but it doesn’t hurt to see how our globally famous northern neighbor does it and maybe take some notes. I also went because these kind of shindigs usually give pretty good swag (I can’t say no to free makeup). And there was an open bar (again, can’t say no).
The Beauty Bar is the ultimate e

As a preview to the upcoming Happy Hour Week (which kicks off this Sunday, April 12--more on that later in the week), Bloomingdale's at South Coast Plaza is playing host to local mixologists (and a chef), who'll showcase some of the drinks and snacks that will be offered during the event. If you're like me, you inhale cookies by the fist full. No
shame. Cookies are excellent. But it would be so much easier to get through
dessert without uncomfortable stares from your date if there was some form of
liquid cookie that could be drunk quickly and was without all those pesky crumbs.
Well, Café Hidalgo in Fullerton has invented a delicious solution--Chris' Oatmeal Cookie. Named after the restaurant's manager and resident
mixologist, Chris Erickson, the drink is served in a martini g
Gustavo probably wouldn't have many kind things to say about the food at Ricardo's Place in San Juan Capistrano. It's one of those brightly-colored, family-friendly joints with big plates of just-ok-if-you-don't-know-any-better Mexican-American standards. For the record, I don't know any better, so it tastes pretty good to me. But forget about the food for a second, because the place has something better than bland burritos: cheap drinks. On each table, there's a card proclaiming, in classic M
On the bar at Habana, the Costa Mesa Lab's best Cuban restaurant (ok, The Lab's only Cuban restaurant), there's a row of tall, thin glasses. In each one: some mint leaves, some limes and some liquid -- I presume sugar water -- at the bottom. The place is a mojito factory. But if you venture beyond the mojitos, Habana has a pretty sturdy drink menu. While Cuban food can trend heavy, the cocktails seem designed only to refresh. At least, that's the case with Habana's white sangria. The joint has
Unless you're an ex-Mouseketeer, the CEO of a Fortune 500 company, or the offspring of one or the other, you're probably not going to make it into Club 33 (Disneyland's hardly secret VIP lounge) for an afternoon highball with Mickey. So then what do you do if your throat's left a little parched from screaming your way through a seventh go on Matterhorn? Well, if riding down Splash Mountain with your mouth open doesn't sound like an option, the next best thing would be to head over to New Orle
Grace LeOh, Avalon Bar... home, sweet hole-in-the wall. Those of you familiar with this local dive already know at least two major details:1. Contrary to what the kitschy, light bulb-lined arrow pointing down at the bar's entrance may lead you to believe, this is place is no disco.2. This establishment doesn't serve hard liquor, so you can leave any hope of a vodka and Red Bull at the door. Now, detail number two might be a bit of a drag for those looking to

Nom. That's pretty much the best way to describe today's Drink of the Week. But for the sake of coherency, I'm going to elaborate further. If you know Costa Mesa's Habana Restaurant, you know its Mojitos. They're the most popular drink on the menu; listed in original mint, aged-rum, blackberry, and raspberry varieties. What doesn't come on the menu is my personal favorite: the Strawberry Mojito. This drink is made up of muddled mint leaves and fresh strawberries, simple syrup, sparkling water
