A link-heavy addendum to a review done a couple issues back. Japan's terminally mindblowing Cornelius is finally coming back here! Among other things, this will include a desperately waited for release of his amazing Sensuous (and I'm man enough to admit that I got that from pitchfork) on April 24. When I heard that he's playing Coachella, I started thinking long and hard about the benefits and potential risks of a second trip to there. Now that I know he's ALSO going to be touring the US, I co
Every other blog is posting it, so why can't we?
Prince covers "Creep" at Coachella, people clap.
Hurry and view it before Prince's ultra-vigilant people tear it down from the internetz.

Thousands rallied on 5/30 in Fresno for Meet in the Middle 4 Marriage Equality event, which included a 14-mile march. Protest organizers chose the city of Fresno--instead of marching to the capitol or in so-called "gay ghettos"--because they city had voted 65%-70% for the passing of Prop 8. Weekly contributor Dave Barton was on hand, and sends us this travelogue:When I step out of the air-conditioned comfort of our rented

Going to Coachella is expensive--$269 for all three days, in fact, not counting service fees and their pre-requisite $3 donation to charity. So who wouldn't want to find a way to get in without, you know, paying? Our local community radio station KUCI may have your (free) way in, as long as you don't mind composing a few thoughtful essays. They're looking for (good) answers to the following questions: "What show do you listen to most often on KUCI," "What is so great about this KUCI show" (which
Whoops. The Friendly Fires show tomorrow at Detroit Bar, which I blogged about earlier today and we told you about in the most recent issue of the Weekly? No longer happening, per word from Jon Reiser, the venue's co-owner. All is not lost: Friendly Fires are still playing Coachella on Sunday, and Reiser says that Friendly Fires are going to reschedule for some time in November. All tickets are refundable at the point-of-purchase, and opening act Hockey will still be playing what is now a free s
Could this band look any cuter? No? Well, sorry to be the one to tell you, but you won't be able to see these dudes--Welsh indie popsters Los Campesinos!--at Detroit Bar tomorrow night as previously been scheduled. Their MySpace says the show has been "sadly canceled," and in its place at Detroit will be a rad gig with three of our local favorites, The Steelwells, The New Limb and Yellow Red Sparks. Detroit Bar co-owner Jon Reiser informs us that Los Campesinos! will be playing the venue in Augu
Riding high on their pre-Coachella shows--The Black Keys wrap that up with a show on Thursday--the Glass House in Pomona has more to come in the future, don't you worry. Especially cool stuff if you like electronica, and who doesn't? (Wussies?)Swedish electro-soul troupe Little Dragon hit the place on May 25, with $13 tickets on sale this Friday, April 17 at noon. NYC-based whiz John MacLean, known and loved by hipsters as The Juan MacLean, plays June 4 with the Field opening. $13 in advance, $1
What up. On my laptop now, in the glorious PRESS TENT. Couches! Free (warm) water! It's...beautiful.I noticed that all of my phone posts didn't have any linebreaks, making all my posts look like one giant paragraph. That's fun. We're in full-on "sethopping" mode over here: saw most of Los Campesinos!, who rocked. "You! Me! Dancing!" killed. Lots of charming on-stage talk, too. The Gobi tent was packed and overflowing--kinda seemed like one of those memorable Coachella performances that'll end up
So, I love Morrissey. I've seen him four times now, and each instance ranks among the happier moments of my life (yes, I know how lame that makes me sound, what of it?). But last night at Coachella apparently wasn't one of his happier moments.I always tell Morrissey detractors who decry him as just being mopey and gloomy that he's not at all like that, that even his most "woe is me" type songs are pretty tongue-in-cheek, and his current band is tight and rocks in a way that the Smiths never did.
OMGzerz! Not that these plain text posts haven't been TOTALLY FANTASTIC, but wouldn't you like to see some actual color photographs from Coachella? Guess what! We got some! Beth Stirnaman's pictures from Friday are right here, for your enjoyment. The pic above is of Morrissey, natch, and inspired this great comment:"For such a preachy vegetable guy, why does he look
so bloated? Morrisey's a fat lazy rich pig who takes millions of
dollars and then prances off to Europe and slags stupid Americans.
Here's something interesting from the OC Register's Soundcheck blog via Palm Springs local news station KESQ: Apparently, Coachella promoters Goldenvoice are liable to be fined $1,000 PER MINUTE for every minute sets went past midnight this past weekend. Yipes.Sure, there's a reason why shows, especially giant, outdoor ones like this, have a certain curfew. Call me naive, but I would ever guess that said curfews could be enforced with such stiff penalties. I decried that the Cure getting cut off
We were so busy seeing sets at Coachella this past weekend that we apparently missed out on some of the real stories--like this naked wizard getting chased around and tased by on-site cops. Everyone wants to have fun at there, but apparently this naked wizard was having a little too much fun. Here's the video that's been making the rounds online, and keep in mind that it is decidedly not safe for work, unless your work is particularly amenable towards copious amount of naked wizard dong. If so,
I've been to one Coachella and that was in 2003. Although the motive behind the hellacious trek from Long Beach to Indio was to see the first Stooges gig in nearly three decades, I ended up witnessing something way cooler than a shirtless Iggy.
Elephants.
You heard me. I saw a train of circus elephants walking in unison across the empty field behind an area where White Stripes fans were watching their beloved duo fight through sound issues that stemmed from an unforgiving desert wind.

For real this time.Back in April, Welsh family band Los Campesinos!, the dudes behind 2008's excellent We Are Beautiful, We Are Doomed, were scheduled to play Detroit Bar in Costa Mesa the day before their Friday Coachella gig. Mysteriously, the show was canceled--neither by the venue nor the band--the day before, the same week another Coachella artist, Friendly Fires, had their show canceled--again, neither by the venue nor the band--the day before that was supposed to take place. Hmm. How stra
Beth StirnamanDo you not know Chromeo by now? Really? Well, that's them up there, playing Street Scene in San Diego this past Friday night. They were awesome. Also awesome: Beth Stirnaman's photographs from day one and day two of the festival. It was like Coachella, but less people, not as many bands, but less time in the hot sun and in the middle of a lovely downtown area instead out in the desert in the middle of nowhere. So, an even trade? But Street Scene wasn't the only event we were all
