  • Less Than a Year Since She Was Appointed Sheriff, Sandra Hutchens Has Made Some Powerful Enemies

    March 26, 2009
  • Pains, Past and Future

Advising Sheriff Mike Carona to suspend his election rival Lt. Bill Hunt may turn out not to have been a brilliant career move for attorney Martin Mayer. As the Los Angeles Times reports: Orange County supervisors decided Wednesday to review their hiring of the lawyer who advised Sheriff Michael S. Carona that he could suspend his chief political opponent from the department. At the end of a two-day hearing on the county's next budget, Supervisor Chris Norby asked that the board review the contr

  • Punishing Prevatt, Flailing Fleischman

Chris Prevatt is a local blogger, an employee of the County Health Care Agency, and a man without a computer. The County took Prevatt's computer as part of an investigation as to whether he used county time to post a blog entry on TheLiberalOC. The post in question displayed a photoshopped image of Supervisor Chris Norby as "Darth Norby", wielding a light-saber and garbed in the robes of a Sith Lord. The investigation is ridiculous—Prevatt has already explained how he wrote the post in h

  • Civilian Review of Sheriff Passes 5-0

Steven Greenhut at the Register's Orange Punch Liberty Blog attended today's Board of Supervisors meeting and reports that Sheriff Mike Carona lost his bid to kill the concept of a civilian review panel. Thanks to a surprising last-minute switch by Supervisor Bill Campbell, the vote was 5-0, according to Greenhut. In 60 days, a detailed proposal will come back to the all-Republican board for consideration. Led by Supervisors John Moorlach and Chris Norby, the board has worked to increase scr

  • Wednesday's Headlines & Surprises: Total Idiot

Fatal Femmes! In the July 30 issue of Time, Sean Gregory reports on the Fatal Femmes Fighting Championship for all-female mixed-martial arts caged combat. Need I say more? Well, okay. In an enjoyable read based on the event in a Compton casino earlier this month, Gregory describes the brutality and “the raucous Femmes crowd, an eclectic, testosterone-heavy mix of bachelor-party drunks, white-collar MMA fans and even a few young girls, ooohed every choke hold and kick to the face.” These fig

  • Wednesday's Headlines & Surprises: A Real Saint in OC

While Politicians Yap, Strickland Performs: The current issue of People celebrates Orange County’s Alena Strickland, 49, for taking in 112 foster children. Yes, 112. Even more impressive? According to the article, each child has had special needs such as autism, blindness and deafness. She doesn’t do it alone. Strickland has her retired restaurateur husband Philip Pedone by her side. What motives her? "I was faced with a need, I can [help], so what's my excuse not to?" she told the magazine.

  • Sheriff Carona Takes Two-Month Vacation

Halfway through today's intensely dull OC Board of Supervisors meeting, during which the supes hemmed and hawed about whether to allow county voters to demand elected officials under indictment take a paid leave of absence, board chairman Chris Norby paused to read a letter from Sheriff Mike Carona, who, in case you didn't know, was indicted last week by a federal grand jury for a slew of corruption charges. In his letter, Carona announced he was—you guessed it—taking a two-month paid leave

  • Wednesday's Headlines & Surprises: Another Carona Monster?

Did Carona Create Yet Another Monster? If I was indicted Sheriff Michael S. Carona, I might be getting tired of Jo Ann Galisky, Kool-Aid Queen. This acting sheriff bit has swelled her mullet. Six weeks after she became temporary head honcho, she's still telling everyone she can that Carona's absence "has had no impact" at the Orange County Sheriff's Department. Galisky (pictured busy at work) barked the line again yesterday, according to Peggy Lowe at the Register. Galisky's wrong again. At a m

  • And The Sheriff is. . .

Sandra Hutchens! The Orange County Board of Supervisors earlier this morning appointed the retired LA County Sheriff's Department division chief to replace Mike Carona as Orange County Sheriff. The vote was 3-2 in favor of Hutchens. Supervisors Chris Norby and Bill Campbell supported Santa Ana Police Chief Paul Walters. Patricia Bates, John Moorlach and Janet Nguyen voted for Hutchens. More new-sheriff stuff to come on this very blog. Stay tuned!

The gas prices nowadays stink to high heaven. So The Orange County Transportation Authority has decided to encourage people to leave their cars at home by offering free one-day bus passes during Dump the Pump week, June 16 - 20. That's right folks. Bus passes. Absolutely free of charge. "But why?" you ask. Surely by now you've heard about the latest scandal to rock the Orange County Sheriff's Department: "Supe Snoop." If you haven't heard about it, you owe it to yourself to read R. Scott Moxley's cover story on Sheriff Sandra Hutchens this week. The footage above that opens over the shoulder of county Supervisor Chris Norby is referenced in this paragraph:On Jan. 13, Hutchens sent more than 20 armed deputies to a Board of Supervisors public meeting, reasoning that protesters of her CCW policy po

  • Tom Daly Gets Unanticipated Support in Supervisor Bid

Orange County GOP insider and former state Sen. John Lewis' early endorsement of Democrat and current Orange County Clerk-Recorder Tom Daly in the race to replace Chris Norby as the Fourth District county supervisor has got some local Republicans fuming. But there is one high-profile, controversial, Republican endorsement of Anaheim's former Mayor Daly that has escaped similar criticism. Linda Ackerman uses Dick to rub NorbyIt's potentially the most lethal weapon in Linda Ackerman's campaign to defeat Republican county Supervisor Chris Norby for Mike Duvall's open state Assembly seat: sexual misconduct innuendo. The reason is simple. Duvall resigned in September after the Weekly and KCAL revealed that the self-styled Christian conservative and vice chairman of the Assembly utilities committee had bragged about having sloppy sex with two Sacramento-based lobbyists--one of whom
