  • Indonesian Earthquake Relief

For anyone interested in helping the victims of the massive earthquake in Java, globetrotting raconteur and author of the forthcoming Prisoner of Trebekistan, Bob Harris has helpfully posted on his blog a list of charities assisting the survivors. Bob's post also touches on some of the questions you should ask when deciding which charity to entrust with your money. Questions like WGWCWJGIAMVW? and HMCJLP?

  • Snoop Dogg Pleads Guilty to OC Felony

The Orange County District Attorney's office announced late this afternoon that rapper Snoop Dogg has pleaded guilty to knowingly carrying a dangerous weapon into John Wayne Airport in Santa Ana a year ago. The 35-year-old international celebrity, whose real name is Cordozar Calvin Broadus, was sentenced to three years probation plus 160 hours of community service. • OC Fundie Funder Gives Money to Wacky Reeps, Homo-Haters--And Lou Correa?!

The most influential Orange County man you've never heard of is undoubtedly Howard F. Ahmanson, Jr., heir to the Home Savings (remember that bank?) fortune. He rarely makes public appearances due to suffering from Tourette's Syndrome, but that hasn't stopped him from giving millions of dollars away to some of the craziest causes imaginable: creationism, anti-gay marriage, anti-gay clerics in the Episcopalian Church, and so many others that in its list of America's most influential evangelicals a

  • Kaba Modern to Perform at the VMA Pre-Show

Though UC Irvine-based hip-hop dance troupe only placed a disappointing third (when evvveryone knew they should have at least been second—c'mon America!) in the debut season of MTV's Best American Dance Crew, they're back for another competition: The chance to present at Sunday's Video Music Awards and $25,000 to their charity of choice. Over the weekend, Christian philanthropist extraordinaire and Weekly reader Howard F. Ahmanson, Jr. responded to my post asking whether he'd buy a new property for Newport Beach's St. James Episcopal Church because they're currently homeless for casting their theological lot with a homo-hating Ugandan. His email is below. Dear Gustavo, I am not going to answer any questions on Capistrano, because I don't really understand the situation there. I did that on the recommendation of my chief of staff

  • La Casa Garcia Releases New Book

Last month, I wrote about the surprisingly good flautas offered by La Casa Garcia in Anaheim. It's not the county's best Mexican-American joint (though does belongs among the top 10), but owner Frank Garcia is a true Mexi-mensch; his annual We Give Thanks Thanksgiving dinners is the stuff of legend, and guarantees him a spot in heaven. You can read about Garcia's story in a new book, We Give Thanks: A Book About Frank Garcia and His Legacy: Restauranteur and Philanthropist. More than mere vanity

  • Controversy at LB's Shore Ultra Lounge

Remember that charity benefit show I wrote about? The one at Long Beach's Shore Ultra Lounge? Yeah, that one. Anyone, the promoter sent me this email (and added it as a comment to all my previous posts) saying that he was, well, ripped off. Here's what he sent me. And before anyone gets mad at me, I am simply the messenger. I have no idea what went on. I am not taking a side. I do not know who is right or wrong. I am just spreading the news.

  • UC Irvine Discontinues Sugar Daddy Henry T. Nicholas' Rowing Teams, 3 Other Sports . . . Unless

The Los Angeles Times' Fabulous Forum blog reports today that UC Irvine as of Saturday is "discontinuing" five sports--men's and women's swimming and diving, men's and women's rowing, and sailing--to cut costs amid reduced state funding. University brass expects to save $1 million by shuttering the programs. Funny, but indicted billionaire Henry T. Nicholas III gave $280,000 more than that just to the UCI crew team, according to Dave Wielenga's July 2004 Weekly cover story,&n
