  • Beating around the Bush, or not, in Irvine

Good news for those of us who have never seen the power of a monarchy in action, and the servility it demands of its subjects. President Bush is extending his weekend trip to California, and will be visiting scenic Irvine on Monday. According to the Register, "Bush will speak to the Orange County Business Council between 8 and 9 a.m. at the Hyatt Regency Irvine". He'll be talking about immigration reform. So, if you want to get a look at the president... well, unless you're one of the preselect

  • Minuteman's Time Up

Certain students at Columbia University are none too fond of Jim Gilchrist. Yesterday the former accountant and OC native's speech was interrupted by protesters storming the stage, where some sort of fracas broke out. Though many news accounts suggest that Gilchrist himself was attacked, he appears to have been escorted offstage with the quickness; perhaps they mean he was attacked in the ideological sense? FOLLOW THIS LINK to see eyewitness video of the protest, courtesy of the Columbia Univers

  • Think for Yourselves, Young Folks, so Long as You Think Like Me

You know what's funny? We ask our young adults to throw themselves into the youth versions of established adult institutions—your governmental bodies, your newspapers, etc.—but when the kids dare express dissent or themselves in a way that rubs the ruling class the wrong way, the adult overlords crack down on the kids. Case in point: the Orange Coast College student government. For whatever reason, the student body officers decided they would no longer say the Pledge of Allegiance be

  • Muzzling Troy

Troy High School in Fullerton has a lot going for it. The combined public and magnet school is known for its high SAT scores, Troy Tech and International Baccalaureate programs, its wins or high placements in the U.S. National Science Olympiad and Western Regional Science Bowl sponsored by NASA/JPL, and recognitions for being among the nation's top schools from President Clinton, the National Blue Ribbon School of Excellence panel and the selection committee for California Distinguished Schools.

  • Neil Young thinks I'm an asshole, and he totally quoted me out of context, too!

Colleague Matt Coker recently tipped me off to a cameo appearance I kinda-sorta make in Deja Vu, the new documentary flick about Crosby, Stills, Nash & Young's 2006 Freedom of Speech tour of America, when the foursome hit the road in support of Neil Young's politically pointed Living With War album. I'm not actually seen in the movie (god forbid), but I'm heard, which is where the kinda-sorta comes in. About 22 minutes into it, as you watch sweeping helicopter shots of downtown Los Angeles and

  • Disgraced Ex-Los Al Mayor Has a Facebook Fan Page!

What is it with the recent trend of disgraced politicians insisting their 15 minutes ain't up? The national case is ex-Illinois governor Rod Blagojevich; the local example is former Los Alamitos Mayor Dean Grose, the fool who forwarded along the cartoon to your left with the caption "No Easter egg hunt this year," then ridiculously claimed he had no clue watermelons are a pickaninny signifier par excellence. Grose resigned both his ceremonial mayoral post and his council seat after a barrage of

  • Holocaust-Denying Brits Languish in Santa Ana Jail, Become Worldwide Far-Right Celebrities

Amongst the many wabs, a couple of chinitos, and I'm sure more than a couple of gabachos currently in custody at the Santa Ana Jail are British nationals Simon Sheppard and Stephen Whittle. They haven't committed any crime in the United States but have nevertheless languished under the watchful eye of SanTana immigration guards for almost two years in a fascinating case involving free speech, international jurisdiction, Holocaust denial, and an American media that just doesn't give a damn about

  • Were Muslim Student Union Free Speech Rights Infringed Upon?

UC Irvine administrators drew widespread criticism for allowing--or not damning vehemently enough--the Muslim Student Union's May 5-21 wrath-a-thon "Israel: The Politics of Genocide." But fourth year psychology major Alaa Alomar accuses the same university officials of denying the same free speech rights to MSU as it does to other campus groups. Writing in the New University student newspaper, Alomar refers to the event not by its controversial title but as the annual "Palestine Awareness Week."
