A coincidence, but one which raises a question. The coincidence: last night Japan won the title game in the World Baseball Classic, and last night I happened across a curious minor relic of the relationship between baseball in the U.S. and baseball in Japan. The question it raised in my mind: do the Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim of Orange County of California of the Pacific Time Zone of the United States of America have an officially stated policy on matters of war and peace and the use of nucl
Just a reminder: Free Blood (ex-!!! percussionist John Pugh, singer Madeline Davy and !!! keyboardist/trumpeter/percussionist Dan Gorman) play Detroit Bar in Costa Mesa. RAMBO.
I wish I had been watching it last night instead of MEET THE SPARTANS (see review here), but duty called, and my assignment took precedence. I knew what I was getting into. And I also think I know what I'm getting into with RAMBO.
I do have a problem with the title. The second Rambo movie was already called RAMBO, with the sub-heading FIRST BLOOD PART II. Then came RAMBO III, which was actually FIRST BLOOD III, or arguably RAMBO II. So the new RAMBO, sans subhead, is in fact the real RA
Remember that Jovovich-Hawk GO International line for Target we discussed earlier? Well the official look book has been released. Verdict?
I'm not too impressed. Not that it's not cute. And not because I wouldn't wear any of the outfits.
Nope. I found the bohemian/folk rock/hippie/granola '60s-inspired collection unremarkable simply because you can see looks like this on any given girl in any given gentrified "hip" urban mecca all across America—Williamsburg, Silverlake, Los Feliz, whatever
Ladies and gents, believers and gentiles: Once again, it's time for the Jewlicious Fest in Long Beach, so mark Feb. 29 through March 2 on your calendars. If you haven't heard of Jewlicious, it's basically the Woodstock of Judaism, with three days of music, food and Kiddush Wine. A festival for the artist and the curious college student.
One highlight of the fest will be Brooklyn rapper Matisyahu, famous for his hit song "King without a crown," who will be speaking about spirituality. The event
Brooklyn trio the Rub have done some insanely thorough curating with their series of yearly rundowns of the best (in their learned opinions) hip-hop tracks. They've strung together dozens of gems for every year from 1979 to 1999 (you can access the MP3 files here). That is some serious dedication and edification, boom-bap aficionados.
Below are a few videos from some of my faves that the Rub have included in their pantheon.
Just-Ice's “Cold Gettin' Dumb” (1986)
Gang Starr's “Who's Go
Look, I don't think it's too much to ask for an album called "Dog Tracks: Songs By Dogs" to feature, I dunno—songs by dogs?
I was incredibly excited when the album came in the mail today. Who could blame me? Dogs are cool, I like music. It seems like a winning proposition. So imagine my horror when I popped the CD in and realized that is, in fact, a wholesale farce. The songs are actually by humans. Yeah, WTF, right? There are already plenty of albums by humans, a.k.a every other album in the
Reuters had an enlightening article today about how in Thailand, authentic Thai food is endangered because of "changing tastes wrought by globalization." And most lamentably "culinary shortcuts (that) have ended up changing Thai flavors, and placing some dishes in danger of extinction altogether."
The story goes on to say that "Convenience and cost are two reasons why Thai food is changing, spurring many locals to bemoan what they think of as the death of their renowned local cuisine."&n
Any knucklehead with DSL and a laptop can now make an electronic track. With a half hour of clicking and fiddling, you can sample enough cheesy beats and mashups to clog arteries from here to Berlin. Simple dropdown mouse maneuvers can transform electro tracks into progressive house tracks (from dry and synthetic to wet and gushy), rhythm tracks can be tempo-tweaked with an upward toggle to change a Timbaland beat into a Chromeo one. Add some T-Pain-esque pitch-correction vocals to your between
Renegade Craft Fair is finally coming to southern California! This is one of the big awesome craft shows (think Felt Club flavor!) that goes on yearly in the U.S., but up until this point it's been held in far-away fabled lands with exotic names like Brooklyn and Chicago. So definitely get there if you can! Admission is free, and with Pabst Blue Ribbon as a sponsor there's most likely some free beers on the horizon!
What should you check out at Renegade? Along with all of the demos
Hey Folks! The Gettin' Made Feature is moving to the Heard Mentality section of the OC Weekly site, make a note of it! Heard Mentality is transforming like your fave yellow Camero into an all-emcompassing culture section.

As part of the bakery's third birthday celebrations, golden tickets will be baked into ten cupcakes at all three locations, including Newport Beach. Thanks to Tim Heidecker (of the sublime Tim and Eric Awesome Show Great Job! on Adult Swim), who posted the link to this video on his Twitter account. Hope you're ready for a new favorite song. We've all enjoyed the combination Taco Bell/Pizza Huts in the past (not so much their bastard cousin, the combination KFC/A&W), but how many of us have ever thought to immortalize the place in a song? Brooklyn rap duo Das Racist, that's who. Enjoy this tender tribute to the hallowed high-caloric hybri
