In terms of media attention, Long Beach has always languished in the shadow of the colossus of the north, L.A. And of course, it has never provided TV networks with the hours of advertising-delighting conspicuous consumption that OC has (The OC, The Real Housewives of…, Laguna Beach). But tonight the spotlight is on Long Beach-- it's featured in one of the most talked about segments of a top-rated network program. Unfortunately, the program is Dateline NBC and the segment is "To Catch
The Windy Ridge Fire is 80% contained, according to the Orange County Fire Authority (OCFA), and is expected to be fully contained sometime tomorrow.
The OCFA recommends checking news radio stations-- KFWB (AM 980), KNX (AM 1070), KFI (AM 640)-- for the latest updates on the fire. Or you can call the Orange County Operational Area Public Information Hotline at (714) 628-7085.
The OCFA's webpage on the Windy Ridge Fire is here.

SELLING LUST, NOT HAMBURGERS
"I am appalled every time I see the new Carl's Jr. ad about 'flat buns.' These ads certainly are helping to destroy our culture. The ads degrade both teachers and students. Please tell Carl's Jr. and the television channels that air the ads, I am ashamed of Carl's Jr."

Hey, Micki -- heard those Del Taco radio commercials yet?
Apparently, good Republicans do exist. CBS News is reporting that Senator Charles Grassley (R-Iowa) has sent letters to mega-millionaire televangelists Paula White, Joyce Meyer, Creflo Dollar, Eddie Long, Kenneth Copeland and Benny Hinn asking they turn over all financial records within a month or risk losing their tax-exempt status after fielding complaints about their extravagant lifestyles (read our take on Copeland from 2005). The six appear on the Costa Mesa-based Trinity Broadcasting Netwo
Tomorrow, those boob tube rubes known as the Parents Television Council will impart its Entertainment Seal of Approvalâ„¢ (their trademark, not our lame irony) on the Trinity Broadcasting Network. "We commend the TBN Networks for upholding the positive values that families hold dear," states a PTC press release. "Our culture seems to grow ever more resistant to what is best for the family and this includes many broadcast and cable networks. The TBN networks stand out for their excellent program
Earlier today, the Justice Department approved Sirius Satellite Radio's proposed $4.59 billion (!) aquisition of satellite old-schooler XM Satellite Radio.
This decision created one single US satellite radio provider.
In response to questions fearing a monopoly, the Justice Dept. said " the combined company won't be able to raise prices profitably because of competition from such forms of audio entertainment as broadcast radio and MP3 players."

Movies get trailers, so why not books? The latest edition of Laguna Beach author Tim Leedom's The Book Your Church Doesn't Want You to Read, which the Weekly previewed here, is now being pimped via video.
Leedom has advantage over most other authors when it comes to this kind of promotion. His day job is at Intellevision, a Laguna Beach company that does film and TV production work.
Let's say you're KOCE-TV Channel 50 head honcho Mel Rogers, and you were presented with the ratings bonanza that was this past weekend's devastating fires in the badlands of northern Orange County. With the advent of digital television, you now have four distinct channels in your capacity. You are also Orange County's public-television station and one of just three TV stations located here (the others being the Trinity Broadcasting Network and KDOC-TV Channel 56). It's also fundraising time, wh
Long Beach duo Michele Rene and Bobby Bancalari are performing at Viento y Agua tomorrow. The pair might not be a household name, but believe you me, these two can flat-out play. The twosome first graced the stage in a group called Marmalade Skies. Some of their tunes were used on the television programs "Felicity" and "Bailey's Mistake." Since that band broke up, they continued to play a blend of folk, pop and jazz that has one foot in tradition while sounding fresh and current.Rene and Bancalar
It's telling about the sad state of religion reporting in Orange County, one of the founts of American Christianity, that no one has yet to report this: a major Trinity Broadcasting Company personality has pleaded guilty to two felony DUIs that put a 70-year-old man in the hospital with serious injuries. On April 26, around 10 p.m., one Stephen Eugene Galiher was speeding at least over 85 miles per hour in his company-owned BMW on the 73 Freeway near the 55 Freeway interchange when he smashed int
You know what can happen if you switch TV channels too quickly with your remote? Your brain mooshing together separate bits of infotainment and leaving you to believe that, say, Los Angeles Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa announced today he would not be running for California governor in 2010 because he is taking up with the divorcing John & Kate Plus 8 lady. That's just silly. Kate Gosselin isn't even a TV newswoman.
Mom fight! Mom fight! In last Wednesday's Fox TV "special" Octomom: The Incredible Unseen Footage, Nadya Suleman takes potshots at Jon & Kate Plus 8's Jon-less, down-on-her-luck Kate Gosselin."It's so staged," Octomom said of tabloid pictures of Gosselin in a bikini on the beach. "She's doing it to get people to take pictures of her. ... I feel like it's cheating [to get a tummy-tuck]. It's her choice. If she has enough money to fix herself, let her. I have a better shape, though. I'm sorr
