  • Monday's Headlines & Surprises: Santa Ana Gag Ballers

Math Skills Looted: Dr. Donny George, director of the Iraqi National Museum during the American invasion, spoke yesterday at the Bowers Museum in Santa Ana and caused “scattered gasps” by showing photographs of destroyed artifacts, writes Sean Emery at the Register. Emery notes that looters stole “15,000 artworks and artifacts” and a few paragraphs later calculated that “about half of what was taken” or “approximately 3,700” pieces were recovered. Let’s see: subtract the six,

  • Bowers Museum Raided--Now Read its Blog!

Driving back from lunch at El Pollo de Oro, a friend noticed a plethora of news vans at the Bowers Museum. "What's happening there?," he wondered out loud. "Probably a new gems exhibit," I cracked. Little did we know that Orange County's oldest private museum was raided by the feds this morning for illegally acquiring looted antiques. Amazing--an immigration raid in SanTana not involving Mexicans for once. Nothing to add right now except the blog of the Bowers Museum collection department.

  • A Blast from SanTana's Gentrification Past

An antiquarian source recently rewarded us with a 1995 Orange County Register clip that is instrumental in understanding SanTana's current gentrification wars. Seems city planners wanted to build a pedestrian bridge over Interstate 5 connecting 20th Street in the mid-1990s so that kiddies could have an easier time attending Hoover Elementary School. Problem was that the 20th Street neighborhood west of the 5 is mostly apartment complexes filled with wabs, while the neighborhood east of the 5 is

  • The Curious Case of the Bowers Museum KKK Tree

Outside the Bowers Museum (the original part, not the multimillion-dollar addition) stands a beautiful, still growing crape myrtle tree. It blooms every spring, adding a bit of genteel, colorful charm to the already-purty facility. You've seen this tree if you ever drive or walk past the Bowers on Main Street in SanTana. What you probably haven't seen, however, is the plaque right below it. It commemorates the tree's planting in 1969 to commemorate SanTana's centennial. The sponsors? The Emma S

A couple of weeks ago, I raved about Los Hermanos Lonchera Sin Fronteras, a taco truck run by two pocho brothers from the 909 who nevertheless can beat the wabs at the game of tortas, bacon-wrapped hot dogs, and tacos. Now, like the good Mexicans that they are, they ripped of Kogi BBQ; you can track them on Twitter, where they leave status updates on where they'll show up with their creations. Davis: Culinary godfather of SanTana? My one vice in life is buying books related to Orange County, and our fair land's numerous social organizations have gathered and published their recipes over the years. The oldest cookbook in my collection is one compiled by the Ebell Society of the Santa Ana Valley located in SanTana. It dates from the 1920s and has hilarious recipes for tamale pies, jellied this, and other culinary relics. But the most telling recipe included is for Jeff Davis pie--as in
