Better than: Spending all night watching VH1 Classic — though hey, that's a pretty close second right there.
Download: "Deny Everything."
Sometimes you just gotta wonder — where's the real show happening? Some bands are so attention-engrossing, you can't believe that you're simultaneously sharing that seemingly personal experience with a few thousand others. Other acts are such a coma-
Last Night: Yacht at the Samueli Theater on June 26, 2008
Better Than: Playing Dance Dance Revolution and it burns more calories then Wii Fit.
Download: See A Penny (Pick It Up) from their album I Believe In You. Your Magic Is Real.
Is it art? Is it electro? Is it electro art? I'm not quite sure, but I do know that last night was an infectious dance party in the form of Yacht sailed into the Samueli Theater with support from Mika Miko.
Club soda, red telephone microphone, beach ball, saxoph
This pic is actually from last Wednesday's Misfits show in San Diego (via Wikipedia). So pretend this is happening in Anaheim, and you have a pretty good idea of what it looked like. Last Night: The Misfits, D.I., Invisible Humans at the House of Blues, Anaheim, Nov. 23, 2008.Better Than: Jerry Only's circa 1999 ill-conceived foray into professional wrestling.Shirtless Dude Count: I only spotted 4, but I wasn't able to get all that close to the stage, so that number likely should be higher. There
Any knucklehead with DSL and a laptop can now make an electronic track. With a half hour of clicking and fiddling, you can sample enough cheesy beats and mashups to clog arteries from here to Berlin. Simple dropdown mouse maneuvers can transform electro tracks into progressive house tracks (from dry and synthetic to wet and gushy), rhythm tracks can be tempo-tweaked with an upward toggle to change a Timbaland beat into a Chromeo one. Add some T-Pain-esque pitch-correction vocals to your between
Let's face it, good local punk bands are hard to come by these days. Seldom does one find the kind of balls-out, hundred-mile-an-hour fury that fuels sweaty mosh pits and unshakable spiky-haired camaraderie on a consistent basis. And behind the Orange curtain, this is an especially harsh reality. That is, until you step onto the concert floor of a Wastey face show. Raised on a steady diet of NOFX, Penny Wise and Black Flag, this five-pack of volitile, wise-ass Huntington Beach punks have managed
LA's only rock 'n' roll duo (at least that's how they bill themselves) It's Casual plays tonight at the Detroit Bar in Costa Mesa. Also performing is Death by Stereo.
Two of my old bands used to play with It's Casual and it's nice to see that since I gave up music, singer/guitarist Eddie Solis and drummer Wal Rashidi have got a decent following of people who know good from bad.
If Slip It In-era Black Flag, Fu Manchu and KISS is your thing, you'll dig It's Casual.
Ron Reyes -- also known as Chavo Pederast, also known as the right answer to the question "who's the best Black Flag singer?" -- has seemingly been living under a rock since bailing on the South Bay punk band more than two decades ago. Rumors swirled that Reyes moved to Vancouver, Canada, and had found God. And now, thanks to myspace.com, those rumors can be confirmed.I don't make a habit of posting links to people's myspace pages, but this is something totally different. Reyes was -- and still
Holy shit! Last night I saw a commerical for the deluxe edition of Pearl Jam's debut Ten. I've been on this Earth for a mere 29 years, but suddenly I feel very, very, very old.
This re-issue includes a remastered version of the record and a remix done by long-time PJ producer Brendan O'Brien, six bonus tracks and a DVD of the group's 1992 performance on "MTV Unplugged."
By the time Ten came out in 1991, I was by no means a music novice. My tape collection (yes kids, there were these things call
The Voids are one of the best local punk bands. They've been playing since 1998 and for some reason, they aren't bigger than they are. They should be huge, but what do I know?
Singer Adri and guitarist Chris have gone through more members than Black Flag and Spinal Tap combined, but their current lineup has my friend Nick on drums. Even if he wasn't playing with them, I'd recommed checking out their show this Saturday at Alex's Bar in Long Beach. With him, it's a must.
HB's Guttermouth is playing Alex's Bar tomorrow night. If I wasn't going to San Diego for the weekend (and leaving in about two hours), I'd go in hopes of getting a healthy dose of adolescent flashbacks. I'm almost embarrassed to admit this, but Guttermouth was one of the first punk bands I got into. At the time, my favorites were all groups that broke up (Black Flag, Descendents, Minor Threat), but Guttermouth was still a new act at that point. I bought Full Length and Friendly People and found
Well, here we are again. Monday....ew. But for those of you who came along for the ride at Coachella 2009, the memories are probably still cycling around in your brain somewhere. Otherwise, you'd probably be getting some work done instead of trolling the internet looking for the next Albert Ching blog post. Sorry, but can we give this man a raise, honestly? Not only did he give you 3 days-worth of blurry iPhone pictures and up-to the-second coverage of the whole sha-bang, but he also Twittered y
...and a form of cancer. According to a press release, the man born Adam Yauch was diagnosed with a cancerous tumor in his left parotid gland. This means the Beastie Boy's latest record, Hot Sauce Committee, will be pushed back and all current shows have been cancelled. But more importantly, this news means we gotta send lots of positive vibes toward MCA's way. He's been a champion of the Free Tibet movement for years and is one of the most underrated bassists of our time. Mr. Yauch, you probabl
If the answer to that question is yes, then do you want to be in a book? Because if you do, you can. According to a Myspace bulletin posted by former Black Flag singer Ron Reyes, a book of people with the Black Flag bars is in the works. Here's what Reyes typed:"so
I got a friend on Myspace who is working on a book called Barred For
Life it chronicles in words and pictures the commitment of a ton of
Black Flag fans who have been "barred for life" by a Black Flag logo (4
