Thirty long hours. That's how much time the 11 men and lone woman of the jury have deliberated the federal corruption charges against ex-Orange County Sheriff Mike Carona without reaching verdicts. Meanwhile, boredom has driven reporters to gossip, play poker, gossip, plan vacations, gossip and bitch. How's Carona spending his time? Mostly huddled in a 7th floor courthouse conference room with a small fan base that lovingly follows him and shoots nasty looks at the medi
MUSINK wasn't the only festival 'round here this past weekend. There was also the decidedly different Ragga Muffins Festival at Long Beach Arena on Saturday and Sunday at the Long Beach Arena, featuring reggae acts like Julian Marley (pictured). Here are some shots courtesy of Beth Stirnaman from day one; come back for day two pics tomorrow.
So many Marleys. As promised, here are Beth Stirnaman's pictures from day two of the Ragga Muffins Festival at the Long Beach Arena. Performers included Stephen Marley (pictured), Lee "Scratch" Perry and others. Nyabinghi!
It was another busy music weekend for us OC Weekly-ers, but who would want it any other way? We've got slideshows of Millencolin at the House of Blues, Anaheim on Sunday (pictured), photographed by Andrew Youssef, the Galaxy's Saturday reopening shot by Beth Stirnaman and Fever Dragon takin' pics Satuday down at the Coach House with English Beat.I checked out the SoCal Rock Revolution festival at Sachi's in Long Beach, the previously mentioned reopening of the Galaxy headed up by Frank Doll &
Two decidedly different shows went down last night in our county, and we were at 'em both. Sir Elton John and Billy Joel went "Face 2 Face" at the Honda Center in Anaheim, and Beth Stirnaman was there to photographically receive the runoff of their ivory-tickling glory. (That sounded sort of gross. I apologize.) Also, Andrew Youssef shot the last night of Aushua's Monday night Detroit Bar residency; he also grabbed some pics of opening acts Local Native and Living Suns. Those are here! And it's
Even if you're not making it out to Coachella this weekend, there's plenty of runoff 'round these parts to keep you satisfied, with a plethora of artists playing the festival hitting us up on the way to Indio.
Last Night: Jenny Lewis, Dawes at the Glass House in Pomona, April 13, 2008.We'll have more thoughts--and pics from Beth Stirnaman!--in the morn', but until then, here's the setlist from the (awesome) Monday night show.
What up. On my laptop now, in the glorious PRESS TENT. Couches! Free (warm) water! It's...beautiful.I noticed that all of my phone posts didn't have any linebreaks, making all my posts look like one giant paragraph. That's fun. We're in full-on "sethopping" mode over here: saw most of Los Campesinos!, who rocked. "You! Me! Dancing!" killed. Lots of charming on-stage talk, too. The Gobi tent was packed and overflowing--kinda seemed like one of those memorable Coachella performances that'll end up
Thank goodness for Beth Stirnaman. If not for her, our Coachella coverage would consist of my blah blahing and iPhone pictures of stages from the crowd, many yards away. Thankfully, she's got a bundle of great images from day two here, so you can put a face to my inspid ramblings. Remember me raving about TV on the Radio doing songs like "Wolf Like Me"? Well, there's a bunch of TV on the Radio pictures, including this one here of fetching frontman Tunde Adebimpe. She also got Calexico, Fle
Last Night: Rufus Wainwright and Lucy Roche Wainwright at the House of Blues Anaheim.
Better Than: A night at the Met.
Best Overheard Question: "Is Rufus gay?"
Download: Poses; "14th Street" off Want One
It was the most dressed down I'd ever seen Rufus Wainwright, which, if you've ever had the pleasure, is a pretty big deal. His un-ironed denim button-up was tucked into an average pair of jeans; strappy Jesus sandals adorned his feet. The only hint of Rufus' usual thought-out
It was a busy weekend in OC Weeklyville, but what else is new? Here's some of the cool stuff we were at the past couple days:Wango Tango at Verizon Wireless Amphitheater: Black Eyed Peas! (Pictured.) Kelly Clarkson! Flo Rida! Lady Gaga! Somewhat inexplicably, All-American Rejects! Chris Victorio hung tough Saturday at the former Irvine Meadows, coming back with these pics of the aforementioned currently hot pop superstars. Imagine that crowd. Yeah.Grand Duchy at Detroit Bar: Former Pixies frontm
Photo by Beth StirnamanMike MajorDeep within the bowels of Orange County law enforcement circles today, a secret ballot vote will be announced regarding the popularity of Mike Major, the acting chief of the district attorney's bureau of investigation since March. On the surface, the non-public contest might deserve little attention. Cops are all pals, right?Wrong.Besides strong personalities, there are factions within factions in every law enforcement department. This is true at the Association
Coachella may be a distant, sweaty, sticky memory at this point, but that doesn't mean that I'm willing or able to shut up about it quite yet. Beth Stirnaman had some car troubles, causing her arduous trek from Indio to be delayed (and nothing's better than being stuck in Indio when there isn't a huge music festival going on), but did that stop her from delivering these great day three images? Heck no! Check them out here. She got Peter Bjorn & John, Perry Farrell, K'naan, the Yeah Yeah Yeah
It's not much, but consider this meager post the first preemptive stitch to our coverage of the Street Scene '09 festival happening in Sand Diego this weekend, Aug. 28-29. Before you say anything, we know that San Diego is not in Orange County. Though it could be argued that some cities at the ass end of the OC seem just a far away in the middle of rush hour traffic. But geographical questions aside, our music editor Albert Ching will be giving you some up close iPhone coverage of the whole s
Seeing as how we're the closest Village Voice Media paper to San Diego, we feel a profound sense of obligation to cover this weekend's Street Scene festival. Yes, that's right, obligation--not the opportunity to hang out in the Gaslamp District checking out awesome bands. It's all about obligation, for sure. The OC Weekly all-star team of writer Nate Jackson, photographer Beth Stirnaman and myself will be hitting up both days of the fest, checking out acts like M.I.A., Bands of Horses, Calexic
Beth StirnamanBadass gramps. We had quite possibly the shittiest weather for a weekend full of outdoor activities--with temperatures reaching into the triple digits, we spent our weekend, well, kind of constantly moist. But that's okay: We trudged on. For you, our readers. For. You.First up, on Friday and Saturday, OC Weekly photographer Beth Stirnaman braved the heat and hit up the San Diego Street Scene music festival. The two-day event featured everyone from M.I.A., Public Enemy (a brief si
Beth StirnamanIt's Monday morning and another Street Scene is officially in the books. And while it's important to note that this parking lot extravaganza of fog-filled stages, oddly eclectic line-ups, mind-altering drugs and festival food has reached it's 25th year, it's also worth mentioning that I'm no longer a stranger to this two-day Coachella by the sea. Although for anyone that was there, the temps this weekend were actually fit for a desert, or maybe Satan's ass crack. But harsh heat
Sheriff Sandra Hutchens, the one on the right.Funds are being collected for an upcoming court challenge of Orange County Sheriff Sandra Hutchens. OCCCCW, a Costa Mesa-based political action committee (PAC) that aims to expand the distribution of concealed weapons permits, has posted on its website a message that begins, "Soon OCCCWS will be going to court to fight just one example of the Sheriff's egregious behavior."
Photo by Beth StirnamanWill work for . . . work, in the City of Orange. When last Clockwork Ernest Hemingwayed on the Potluck for Progressives, this scratch-resistant sidewinder told of how the kibosh had to be put on the Nov. 13 gathering because the scheduled speaker from the regrouping California Cannabis Initiative backed out.At the time, event coordinator Duane Roberts disclosed the new Potluck for Progressives date would be Nov. 20--this Friday night--and that the topic would be "The Cri
