  • Monday's Headlines & Surprises: Laguna prefers goats on grass

Mexicans are safe on this one: A report issued recently to the Laguna Beach City Council found that goats will clear vegetation from fire-sensitive slopes for a cost of $198,000 per year, while juveniles working off a crime in the county’s Probation Department would require $385,000. A consultant to the city noted that goats are “advantageous in their ability to work in all types of weather and terrain conditions.” So the goats win again. But tell me recidivism rates for probation punks w

  • Wally George Archives: Outta Here?

I recently had occasion to talk to Bert Ellis, new owner of KDOC, which of course was the home for years of the infamous teflon-toupeed conservative combat-TV host Wally George. Wally, as you probably know, was the forerunner of today's pretenders to the throne like Bill O'Reilly, and in college I even named my band after one of his catchphrases..."His Wife Bruce" (a line Wally would use to imply a guest was gay). So it saddened me to hear that when Ellis took over, he found that the previous m

  • Wally sings!

Back in October, I mentioned a conversation I had had with KDOC head honcho Bert Ellis, who wanted to get the word out to fans that a lot of the old Wally George archives were missing. Well, some kind soul managed to get hold of the old 12" E.P. "Wal-ly, Wal-ly," on which Wally, ahem, "sings," and put recordings of it up on a Myspace page for all to hear. The anonymous benefactor claims he'll soon be adding tracks from Wally's full-length album, "Wally George Sings the Rock Hits." Music lovers

  • Breaking News: The Poorman Gets Fired Again?

It was only a month ago that we wrote about Jim "The Poorman" Trenton's triumphant return to KDOC, and at that time, the station seemed very happy to have him back. Not for long. Poorman's Bikini Beach has been taken off the air, in what appears to be a dispute over some of his advertisers. In response to an emailed query by the Weekly, KDOC's Bert Ellis wrote "Jim never tried to go mainstream with his show or his advertising. He did not grow with the opportunity." Poorman claims his contract

  • Poorman Sues KDOC

As predicted, on January 18th Jim "The Poorman" Trenton and his attorney Brian D. Boydston filed suit against KDOC and its parent company Ellis Communications. The suit alleges breach of contract, and demands damages "in a sum according to proof at trial, but not less that $27,646" for revenues lost due to ads being pulled from the TV show Poorman's Bikini Beach, ads involving the adult DVD companies Landmark Video, Maximum Mojo, and genital wart removal specialist Dr. Jeffrey Lauber. Curiously

  • DayBreak OC gets a bullet in the head

Figures that yesterday---when I wrote this Heard Mentality blog post about the one good reason to watch DayBreak OC---would be the same day KDOC owner Bert Ellis decided to mercifully shoot his broken-legged horse in the head. Yep---DayBreak OC, the daily one-hour comedy/variety show that began life in September, 2007 with the promise of bringing serious all-Orange County broadcast news to our 3 million residents---has been canceled. Ellis cites the incredibly shrinking economy as reason for
