Going on hour eight of my hangover. Nice job, Griley! Way to double fist Jack-and-Cokes until you're plastered and slobbering! (But man, the Fielding demos sure sounded awesome cranked up to eleven on the way home. Don't worry ma, I wasn't driving.)
Anyway: woke up with a giant hangover this morning and quickly banged out a crappy review of the Paul Frank party. It ended up being completely re-written for this week's upcoming issue, but I thought a few tidbits of my o.g. version might be blog-w
The LA Times is reporting, via their Buzz Bands blog (monitored by the fabulous Mr. Kevin Bronson), that the Galaxy Theatre in Santa Ana will shut it's doors forever in two weeks. Set to take its place, according to the LAT: a 25,000-square-foot club called RevolveR, which will "cater to upscale clubgoers, offering multiple rooms of entertainment, myriad VIP areas, fireplaces, indoor/outdoor seating and eight full-service bars. Additionally, plans call for RevolveR's design theme to change every
The two-day lineup for this year's San Diego Street Scene was just announced today, and it doesn't look half bad, in this humble ex-music editor's opinion. Headliners include Beck, the Black Crowes, X, Tegan and Sara, Justice, plus Spoon, TV on the Radio, STS9 (Sound Tribe Sector 9), Michael Franti & Spearhead, The National, Atmosphere, Cat Power, Hot Chip, The New Pornographers, Vampire Weekend, The Hives, Cold War Kids, Ghostland Observatory, Spiritualized, Antibalas, Man Man, The Mother Hips,
The video trailer for Beck's Modern Guilt (out July 8 on DGC) is up now on Amazon.com's site. The clip's stylized B&W starkness pays homage to Warhol and Truffault, while the peppy, urgent retro-surf pop shimmying recalls B-52's, with unexpected tangents into analog-electronic tomfoolery and clipped, staccato funk and what could be a sideways nod to Motown. Intriguing, if not mind-blowing...
Edit: As you can see, the shock of this news has affected more than one of us here on staff...Acclaimed LA/OC radio station Indie 103.1--which attracted nationwide attention due to their deep playlists and unconventional specialty shows in the face of increasingly uniform FM radio formats--is abandoning terrestrial radio today, in favor of broadcasting solely online.A statement on their official site says, "Indie 103.1 was recently faced with only one option --- to play the corporate radio game"
I review the sophomore release from The Shortwave Set in the Weekly this week, but seeing as how the album's been out for like, forever, overseas, and it's out today in the states, why wait to read it? Read it here, now! The future is now! But actually the past! Think about it. The Shortwave SetReplica Sun Machine(Wall of Sound)Danger Mouse first caught international acclaim in 2004 with The Grey Album, a then-controversial, now-legendary, blatantly illegal blend of Jay-Z's The Black Album and T
OMG. Fairs and Kelly Clarkson, two of my favorite things, together at last on July 23. What a day.The lineup for acts for this year's OC Super Fair is shaping up, and if you like nostalgia, well, this is the event for you! Other than Ms. Clarkson, it's pretty much all oldsters: Hearts, Moody Blues, Duran Duran (awesome, yes, but still old), etc. Sure, it's a fair, what do you expect, blah blah blah, but some of my best music memories came from the Arizona State Fair: Bob Dylan in 2002 (OK, he's
Last Night: Beck at Club Nokia November 9, 2008.
Better Than: seeing Beck at the Hollywood Bowl.
Download: "Gamma Ray" from the Beck website [http://www.modernguilt.com/#4]
It was a grand evening for the grand opening of Club Nokia in downtown Los Angeles. Club Nokia appears to have studied many of the strong attributes of other concert venues before finalizing the design on their newest creation. A semi-circle of seats in the upper deck looked down on the stage strategically placed with exce
As Jessica Dobson and her band, Deep Sea Diver, continue to pick up steam on their national tour, they made a stop in Rock Island, Illinois for a little recording "sesh" for www.daytrotter.com which is going to be posted...soon (patience, grasshopper). No doubt culling a few key tracks from DSD's latest EP New Caves, this is just the latest chapter in a promising line of come-ups for Dobson whose been on tour with alt rock astronaut Beck and now Connor Oberst and his Mystic Valley Band. Anyways,
