Day 2 of SXSW
In my last post, I predicted Holy Fuck's set would be very hard to surpass. Well, I think it was at least equaled by a few artists on the bill at Barcelona—all instrumental hip-hop artists, in fact (Nosaj Thing, Free the Robots, Gaslamp Killer and Flying Lotus). Who would've thought such types would be standouts at SXSW? I mean, there wasn't a guitar to be found in the joint all night...
But first some gigs that preceded the Barcelona extravaganza. At Soho Bar, Blues Control—
In the most awesome co-headlining tour since 2004's "The Independent Tour" with Kelly Clarkson and Clay Aiken, buzz-building Seattle-originated bands Low vs. Diamond (who were here last month opening up for Santogold) and Barcelona are currently on the road together.
Cool, right? What's cooler is that said tour is coming to Detroit Bar in Costa Mesa on Dec. 9. That's pretty soon! Tickets are $10, and on sale now right here. Opening up on this date is Orange County's The Shys.

*Updated, with new info on the bottom...**Moved up, 'cause it's timely! The colonization of downtown SanTana by Costa Mesan pioneering hipsters is complete. Both the Gypsy Den and Memphis have long successfully operated branches in the city's Artists Village, which always made us wonder why the other LAB stalwart, Habana, never set up shop in the most-Mexican city in America. That's about to change, as the owners of the Gypsy Den and Habana have teamed up to open Lola Gaspar in the space previous
A certain music festival and conference held annually in the sleepy hamburg of Austin, Texas announced their initial slate of performers this year, and there's not an Orange County or Long Beach band among them. We had several acts in last fall's CMJ Music Marathon, so this is kind of a bummer. Keep in mind, though, that they only announced a little under 140 bands (I counted!) today, and there are plenty more to come--South by Southwest usually hosts about 10 times that.As usual, it looks to be
Oh, Wednesdays. To paraphrase Kris Kristofferson, there's something 'bout a Wednesday that makes a concert-goer feel alone. There's never too much going on 'round the ol' county on a Wednesday, but tonight there is this show at Chain Reaction: Virginia's Mae, pictured, along with Barcelona, Person L and Set to Sea, who were just featured in our very own pages. Mae (short for "Multi-sensory Aesthetic Experience," apparently; OK, sure) have been doing their pop-punk emo thing since 2001--they have
Nick Jr.'s Yo Gabba Gabba! isn't a typical kiddie fare and anyone that's into music should know that by now, and it's not just those oddly appealing monsters and robots like the Gary Baseman-esque Muno. The show--co-created by Huntington Beach resident/Aquabats lead singer Christian Jacobs, by the way--has featured surprisingly hip bands so many times that it's really not surprising any more. Among the names: the Roots, Of Montreal, Mates of States, the Shins, Hot Hot Heat, Chromeo and Mark M
Some would credit Europe with this thing we call electronic dance music by pointing back to the pioneering work of Kraftwerk, Giorgio Moroder and Can. They would be half right: Contemporary electronic dance music, like blues, rock and jazz, is a progeny of the interplay between black and white music. (See Juan Atkins, Frankie Knuckles and Moby). And so, for many years New York was the club capital of DJ culture, and Southern California was its backyard playground.DJ T
