I watched the 49th Annual Grammys just long enough to see the Police jam out an extended version of "Roxanne" and Tony Bennett throw out an awkward plug for Target. I couldn't really ask for any more. As far as the actual awards go, the Dixie Chicks were the night's big winners, taking home five awards including Album of the Year and Song of the Year. Makes you wonder where the industry was a few years ago when the band was having its albums steamrolled.
But the highlight of the night was far a
Freelancer Ben Westhoff (you may recognize the name from "The Efron Scandal") posted this provocative list on our sister paper Pitch Weekly's blog. We reprint it here because this is a time of giving (said the atheist).

This cerebral garbage entertained about 100 people, none of whom didn’t either live in Canada or work as a music critic. Speaking of critics, it’s hard to agree with Sasha Frere-Jones about anything, but he was right

Love is a many-splendored thing and all, but it's also dependent upon a relationship's context -- and so is the associated music. You don't want Al Green's "Let's Get Married" to stream through the car speakers during your third date, you don't want your intended to think you stopped listening to new records after "I Love You Just The Way You Are" was released. . .aaaand you don't want "You Oughtta Know" to come on, well, ever.

Army Navy—an excellent power-pop band from LA, returns to Orange County tonight with a show at the Coach House in San Juan Capistrano. It's a surprisingly hip show for that venue; not trying to talk out of class or anything, but their next two shows after this are the Bacon Brothers and Stephen Pearcy of Ratt.
If you've heard the soundtrack to modest hit fall comedy Nick and Norah's Infinite Playlist, you've heard Army Navy; their tune "Silvery Sleds" shares space on that record with indie
Picking the best folk and Americana records of the year isn't nearly as hard as discarding those great records that just didn't feel right stuck in the category.
Releases by Calexico and DeVotchKa felt far too worldly to pigeonhole as folk or country, for instance, while Blitzen Trapper's fantastic Furr smells more like the Kinks than Neil Young. [Editor's note: That's why we put it on our indie-rock list.] We likewise discarded Shearwater's near-masterpiece Rook, despite the fact that the alb
It's getting to the point where the idea of the Coachella lineup is actually more appealing than whatever the eventual Coachella lineup will be, even if the actual lineup is really impressive. It's like Spock said, "having is not such a pleasing thing as wanting."So yeah, still no official Coachella bill, but a relatively entertaining fake one has made the rounds, with a mix of heavily rumored names (Paul McCartney, The Killers, Fleet Foxes), reasonable estimates (The Knux, She & Him, Yeasay
Watching Blitzen Trapper RIGHT NOW in the Gobi tent. Rootsy rocky. Y'know. Pleasant enough. "Kinda boring," said OC Weekly''s Nate Jackson. "Not bad if I was seeing them at the Gypsy Den." Or maybe he said Gypsy Lounge? Who could say.
Saturday has gotten knocked for not being up to par, but it's more loaded than given credit for: Band of Horses, Fleet Foxes, Jenny Lewis, TV on the Radio, Mastodon and Atmosphere all ahead. And the Killers. Yeah.
I heard Joss Stone as we entered today. Sounded lik
I'm in the Motel 6, a.k.a. the COMMAND CENTER, but my WiFi expired (24 hours) so I'm iPhoning it in. Pay another $2.99? Heck no!
Let's talk about Saturday for a bit, no?- TV on the Radio were real good. I saw them a few years ago and was kind of "eh" on it, though I always dug their recorded material. This was lightyears from that. Makes me wish I had seen them at the Glass House on Tuesday.- Fleet Foxes, on the side stage (the "outdoor theatre," if you will) got totally DROWNED THE FUCK OUT by
Thank goodness for Beth Stirnaman. If not for her, our Coachella coverage would consist of my blah blahing and iPhone pictures of stages from the crowd, many yards away. Thankfully, she's got a bundle of great images from day two here, so you can put a face to my inspid ramblings. Remember me raving about TV on the Radio doing songs like "Wolf Like Me"? Well, there's a bunch of TV on the Radio pictures, including this one here of fetching frontman Tunde Adebimpe. She also got Calexico, Fle
Well, here we are again. Monday....ew. But for those of you who came along for the ride at Coachella 2009, the memories are probably still cycling around in your brain somewhere. Otherwise, you'd probably be getting some work done instead of trolling the internet looking for the next Albert Ching blog post. Sorry, but can we give this man a raise, honestly? Not only did he give you 3 days-worth of blurry iPhone pictures and up-to the-second coverage of the whole sha-bang, but he also Twittered y
Back in 1996, it seemed like a pretty good bit that, post-"The Distance," Cake would wind up as a one-hit wonder. Yet the Sacramento band became one of the most reliable commodities in modern rock, which resulted in a ton of slightly amusing novelty hits: "Never There." "Sheep Go To Heaven." "Short Skirt/Long Jacket." "Love You Madly." An instrumental version of "Short Skirt/Long Jacket" is even the theme song to NBC's (which was just renewed, a rare victory for fans of nerdy network TV shows).
This Weekend: Wilco at the beautiful Fox Theater Pomona.
Better Than: Sneaking downloads of all those leaks of their forthcoming self-titled album.
Saturday night was a Wilco first for me--no, it definitely wasn't my first time catching them live, but it was the first time I've ever seen frontman Jeff Tweedy even somewhat happy.
Tweedy replaced his usual endearing snark with smiles and requests to sing along with him, even jumping onto the floor and playing the guitar amongst fl
Tired of the Black Eyed Peas yet? No? Great! Well, they're headlining the 25th installment of San Diego's Street Scene, happening on August 28 and 29 (three weeks after playing the Pacific Amphitheatre in Costa Mesa on August 7). Also playing: M.I.A., Thievery Corporation, Modest Mouse, the Dead Weather, Chromeo, Calexico, Silversun Pickups, Band of Horses, Conor Oberst and the Mystic Valley Band, Girl Talk and more. Highlights of lower down on the poster: Holy Fuck (rad), Los Campesinos! (super
Andrew YoussefSince reopening this past May with a show from Gogol Bordello, the Fox Theater in downtown Pomona has continually impressed by netting top-flight shows: Wilco, the Flaming Lips, Yeah Yeah Yeahs, Band of Horses, Girl Talk, Ween, Cake, Marilyn Manson. After tonight's Paramore (pictured on August 1 opening up for No Doubt at Verizon Wireless Amphitheater in Irvine) show, though, they've got...not a lot.
