Last year Omar Chatriwala moved from Austin, Texas to Orange County to help get Squeeze OC off the ground. Recently he decided to move again, this time from Orange County to Qatar to help get Al Jazeera's English-language channel off the ground. Chatriwala's blog, OC in OC, is among the most popular blogs on the SqueezeOC website, of which he was an editor. He has traveled from Austin's city limits to the middle of the Middle East with a brief layover behind the Orange Curtain, all for the sake

The three bands on this bill proved that rock can be uplifting without being corny—which was an inspirational lesson on a Sunday night in a mostly empty house. Detroit Bar's desolation was a shame and maybe to be expected, as the lineup seemed to be cobbled together at the last minute. But the groups proved to be troopers, playing as if to a packed room.

How many times have we heard this same exact story? Too many. Rising Long Beach rock group Crystal Antlers' vehicle, containing all of their equipment, was stolen last night. This always sucks, of course, but what's worse is that Crystal Antlers are slated to play the South by Southwest fest in Austin, Texas in March.
A MySpace bulletin making the rounds has the details:

Austin, Texas' Ghostland Observatory are poised to blow up with their Feb. 26 album Robotique Majestique (on their own Trashy Moped label). Here's a track, “Dancin' on My Grave (Let There Be Vinyl Remix),” from that album to whet your appetite for it. Sounds pretty tough and noisy for an indie-dance single.
GO play Henry Fonda in LA April 18 and the Joshua Tree Music Festival May 16.
LA's HEALTH bring their beneficial noise to SXSW.
If you're down in Austin, Texas for the South by Southwest conference/festival, please check out this outstanding bill and mingle with the VVM music editors (you will never encounter so much charisma in one room).

The annual sonic bacchanal known as South by Southwest goes down March 12-16. Every year, several thousand music-biz types, musicians and ordinary mortals with more money than sense descend upon downtown Austin, Texas, cramming five months of musical activity into five days. I'll be blogging about all the awesome and heinous stuff I see/hear while I'm there, but for now, here's a lil' sneak preview of the festivities.
OC/LBC bands making the trek to the Lone Star state's capital include Free th
Patrick Chavis got a taste of Pinoy pop culture at UCI Friday night, where he caught Bambu, Rhythm Natives and the Fighting Cocks. Pat also ran into a tagger who dreams of letters. Read his review and see some photos here.

Austin, Texas - First day of SXSW is always stressful. So are the second, third and fourth days. No matter where you are at this huge musical clusterfuck, you're always haunted by the thought that something better is happening somewhere else. Unless you've mastered the ability to be in five places simultaneously, you have to settle for one performance at a time. Humans are so limited...

Lou Reed is an asshole—but a very talented, sharp-minded asshole.
Below, hear the rock legend drone on about the inferior sound quality of MP3s during the just-completed South By Southwest in Austin, Texas. I love much of Lou Reed's music (especially that of the Velvet Underground, whose canon is essential), but I sure wouldn't want to live with him. In honor of his notorious prickliness, check out a video of his band doing “Vicious” live in 1974. (I do like Lou as a speed-freak blond—
Last Night: Ink-N-Iron Festival at the Queen Mary June 1st, 2008
Better Than: Getting a tattoo from a shady parlor.
Download: The First Vietnamese War from their first album Passover.
I thought I was in a hornet's nest when I heard the consistent buzz of tattoo needles as I walked into the Queen Mary. The Queen Mary had been transformed into a giant tattoo parlor with multiple floors of artists with bottles of ink at their disposal. The Ink-N-Iron festival was already in full swing.

A certain music festival and conference held annually in the sleepy hamburg of Austin, Texas announced their initial slate of performers this year, and there's not an Orange County or Long Beach band among them. We had several acts in last fall's CMJ Music Marathon, so this is kind of a bummer. Keep in mind, though, that they only announced a little under 140 bands (I counted!) today, and there are plenty more to come--South by Southwest usually hosts about 10 times that.As usual, it looks to be
A lot of people are packing up and headed to Austin, Texas as we speak, but none of us here at OC Weekly are among then. I know, sad, right? I've never even been to Texas. I'm not even sure it exists.
Keith MayEach Tuesday in May, Newport Beach's the Jakes will be playing--along with a rotating cast of bands from OC and beyond--at eVocal. And also each week this month, Sameer Gadhia, lead singer of the Jakes (pictured) will be sharing his thoughts on the shows. Here's the first installment:BY SAMEER GADHIAWelcome to the first of four blog spots that have been gifted to me by the local music enthusiasts at the OC Weekly who have helped generate buzz about our May KROQ "Locals Only" residency a

An Amy Poehler look-alike crosses the finish line at the Trek Women Triathlon in Austin, Texas, where she had to get wet first. The caps are their's as the Trek Women Triathlon Series bills itself as "the ONLY women's triathlon series CREATED BY WOMEN, RUN BY WOMEN, EXCLUSIVELY FOR WOMEN." Nothing wrong with that. But it seems from our game-day broadcasting booth high in the sky over Anaheim that their triathlon at Disneyland Sunday morning is not a triathlon at all. Acc
Big time late slip to us on this one, but Tustin/Long Beach band Vast Atlantic have broken up. Sad times.They've been favorites of ours for a while, having been profiled last fall in Locals Only by Erin DeWitt, and included in our "Citizen Blast" compilation last year, so we're bummed. They announced the news last month via a MySpace message, so forgive our tardiness in just catching wind of this now. Lead singer Jarrett Killen was dealing with some injuries and is now based in Austin, Texas;
Yesterday, it was announced that Long Beach psych-rock jam artists Free Moral Agents (pictured) are hitting the road with their El Paso compadres Zechs Marquise. Their tour, which starts November 7 in ZM's hometown, is set to run for about three weeks at this point, with dates to be added shortly. It's worth noting that both bands share a pretty obvious Mars Volta connection, with FMA keyboardist/brain child Ikey Owens and ZM drummer Marcel Rodriguez-Lopez sharing the stage in that band.Marce
