  • 10 Songs About Christmas

Jeff Shaw at our sister paper City Pages goes off the beaten sleigh path to bring his readership 10 songs for the season. Ever generous, Jeff's allowed us to share 'em with you: 10 and 9: Two from Tom Lehrer My uncle would never forgive me if I didn't mention Tom Lehrer's scathing, brilliant "Christmas Carol.." Unfortunately, only the lyrics are available on-line, and the only performance of the song is a dreadful reading performed by the even more dreadful Christopher Hitchens. Do Not Want. O

  • Five Songs for the New Year

Here's another roundup from our pal Jeff Shaw: Ah, the New Year. Time of transformation, time of bubbly-spawned magic, time of awkward passes and resolutions you mean at the time. While you're preparing for the long sled ride down Hangover Hill, here's some topical listening material. 5. Death Cab for Cutie, "The New Year" "So this is the New Year ... and I don't feel any different." Who among us cannot identify with these sentiments? The ennui associated with arbitrary calendar-flippage? We'v

  • First Crop of SXSW Acts Announced, OC/LB Bands Conspicuously Absent

A certain music festival and conference held annually in the sleepy hamburg of Austin, Texas announced their initial slate of performers this year, and there's not an Orange County or Long Beach band among them. We had several acts in last fall's CMJ Music Marathon, so this is kind of a bummer. Keep in mind, though, that they only announced a little under 140 bands (I counted!) today, and there are plenty more to come--South by Southwest usually hosts about 10 times that.As usual, it looks to be

  • Daily Coachella Update: Still No Lineup, but There is a Fake One

It's getting to the point where the idea of the Coachella lineup is actually more appealing than whatever the eventual Coachella lineup will be, even if the actual lineup is really impressive. It's like Spock said, "having is not such a pleasing thing as wanting."So yeah, still no official Coachella bill, but a relatively entertaining fake one has made the rounds, with a mix of heavily rumored names (Paul McCartney, The Killers, Fleet Foxes), reasonable estimates (The Knux, She & Him, Yeasay

  • TONIGHT: Last Night of Free Moral Agents Residency at Detroit Bar

Tonight closes the unexpectedly eventful Free Moral Agents February residency at Detroit Bar in Costa Mesa. The Long Beach band were involved in a bit of a disagreement with Juana Molina last week, but things will probably not be quite so dramatic tonight. Should still be interesting to see if the incident is addressed, or if all have moved on (except, y'know, muckraking bloggers). Show is free.March's Detroit Bar residents are Orange's Aushua, though scheduled touring shows on Monday, March 2 (

  • TONIGHT: Asobi Seksu at Detroit Bar

Though Asobi Seksu has a Japanese name (it means "casual sex"--scandalous!) and a Japanese singer, Yuki Chikudate, they're from New York City. The rest of the band are regular ol' whiteys, as you can see from the pic. Asobi Seksu play the Detroit Bar in Costa Mesa tonight, touring off their latest release, Hush, which came out last month. Since their lead singer is an attractive Asian female, there's a chance there might be a higher than usual number of creepy dudes there. Be aware! Tickets are

  • Slideshow: Asobi Seksu at Detroit Bar

Remember that show from NYC's Asobi Seksu at Detroit Bar last night we were talking about? Well, Chris Victorio totally went to it! And he came back with fun pics like the one above. And there's more, here.

  • TONIGHT: Aushua, Yellow Red Sparks, Parade of Lights at Detroit Bar

Yes, as Nate pointed out on Friday, we do talk up Detroit Bar shows a lot on here. Like, OK, a lot. But there's really nothing else going on tonight--it's Monday, after all. And the March residency at Detroit Bar has been pre-empted a couple times this month: for Ra Ra Riot on March 2 and Asobi Seksu on March 16--but it's back on tonight, with Orange's Aushua playing for the second time at Detroit this month, along with openers Parade of Lights, from Long Beach, and Yellow Red Sparks, and the ac

  • TONIGHT: Final Night of Aushua Residency at Detroit Bar

Orange's Aushua have had a truncated March Monday night residency at Detroit Bar--thanks to shows this month from Ra Ra Riot and Asobi Seksu--but their third and final show is tonight, and with some nifty opening acts: LA's Lemon Sun and Local Natives, formerly of Orange but currently of Silver Lake. Free as usual at Detroit on Mondays--April's residency will be from LA's wild and wooly The Ringers, who opened up for Japanese Motors at the very same venue last month.
