  • What You Missed Over The Weekend Part XXII

Memorial Day Edition Long weekends aren't just for relaxing. OC Weekly staffer Luke Y. Thompson kept himself busy by going to the Scottish festival at the OC fair, where he found some of his very distant relatives from the Clan Graham. He also attended a cookout with a bunch of other (relatively) young movie critics, among them Todd Gilchrist, Brent Simon, Dave White, and Alonso Duralde. But all of this action didn't stop him from writing his weekly Fast Food Review, this week features the many

  • What You Missed Over The Weekend Part XXIII

This weekend Gustavo Arellano sharpened his writing pen and wrote a post calling-out historian Chris Jepsen for not referencing his pieces on a historical blog. Alex Brant-Zawadzki reported (again) on the continuing construction cost climb on estimates for the 241 Toll Road through Tressles. Been on a meat eating binge? Edwin Goei's Monster Munching has the perfect solution for a detox, Souplantation's cookies. Apparently they're "buttery and not overly sweet." Mmm. Gustavo also caught The Re

  • What You Missed Over The Weekend Part XXIV

The big news of the weekend was the OC Weekly's two wins at the Association of Alternative Newsweeklies Awards in Philadelphia. Gustavo Arellano took home the award for Best Column with "Ask A Mexican" while R. Scott Moxley bagged second place in the prestigious public service category for his coverage of the indictment of Sheriff Mike Carona. The Ink and Iron Festival in Long Beach called out to Andrew Youssef who reviewed the Black Angel's performance and chatted up some of the tatted up ladi

  • NAMM Stories: Reports From the Frontlines

Photo by Andrew YoussefBY RYAN RITCHIEApparently, scoring a ticket to the NAMM show is like the hair farmer version of acceptance into Disneyland's Club 33. Just ask my friend Brian, who was turned away from the event on Saturday even though I pleaded with the press people using my otherwise indefensible charm. I said adios to Brian and met up with photographer Andrew Youssef, who I bonded with earlier that week over the Jets to Brazil reference in his email address (I'll let the readers try to

If you were not one of the very few to attend the NAMM Show this past weekend at the Anaheim Convention Center--and, well, odds are you were not--you can get a better idea of what the heck goes on over there thanks to this slideshow from Andrew Youssef. Also, don't forget about Ryan Ritchie's report from the convention center. To paraphrase David Bowie, NAMM, bam, thank you ma'am.

Photo by Andrew YoussefOur photographer Andrew Youssef was a busy guy this weekend, shooting not one but three shows: The Submarines and Morning Benders (pictured) Friday night at Detroit Bar, Nickel Eye and Low vs. Diamond at the same venue on Saturday night, and Meshuggah and Cynic last night at the House of Blues, Anaheim. Please to enjoy his pics from the shows.Oh, and you might want to check out Doug Wallen's article on the Morning Benders on Ned Raggett's piece on Cynic.

Think that of Montreal was the only show that we were at last night? Of course not! Our pal Andrew Youssef was snapping away at last night's show at the Grove of Anaheim from punk vets NOFX, with openers Pour Habit and Smoke or Fire. The pictures: here! Get to clickin', yo.

  • Slideshow: MUSINK Tattoo Convention and Music Festival

Tattoos and music are pretty inextricably linked, for better or worse--your Travis Barkers, your Tommy Lees--so it makes sense that bands like Story of the Year (pictured), Atreyu, Throwdown and more would descend upon the Orange County Fairgrounds for the MUSINK Tattoo Convention and Music Festival. Andrew Youssef was there, and has images of tons of the acts here. Just don't look for Danzig, who didn't allow photographers. That guy.

  • Slideshows: Elton John and Billy Joel at the Honda Center, Aushua @ Detroit Bar

Two decidedly different shows went down last night in our county, and we were at 'em both. Sir Elton John and Billy Joel went "Face 2 Face" at the Honda Center in Anaheim, and Beth Stirnaman was there to photographically receive the runoff of their ivory-tickling glory. (That sounded sort of gross. I apologize.) Also, Andrew Youssef shot the last night of Aushua's Monday night Detroit Bar residency; he also grabbed some pics of opening acts Local Native and Living Suns. Those are here! And it's

I am lame. Among the lamest, really. I didn't go to Autolux at Detroit Bar last night, even though I had been planning on it for a while. The reasons aren't that interesting (I worked late and was really sleepy--see, told you, not interesting), but at least some people were cool enough to go, like photog extraordinaire Andrew Youssef, who had this to say about the gig:"It was freaking awesome. The Detroit Bar was packed. Autolux had their own sound guy so everything was perfectly mixed. A lot of

  • Coachella Update: Set Times Announced (!), Joss Stone Added

Who is that heavily made-up young lady gazing at you from your desktop? Why, it's British neo-soul singer Joss Stone, of course! If you haven't really thought about her in a while, you're not alone, she kind of feels (to me, at least) like a has-been at this point even though she only just turned 22. But that's not really fair of us. She's got a new album, Colour Me Free, out this summer, and she just got added to the Coachella lineup, playing on Saturday at 2:40 p.m. on the main stage. What's th

About to head out to take on another day. Whee! Beth Stirnaman is here in OC Weekly Central (Motel 6 in Palm Springs) uploading pics, so soon you'll have some stuff to look at instead of just these awesome plain text posts. Heard Mentality blogger Nate Jackson is here, too. Say hi, Nate! Before shoving off for Coachella: Part Deux, let's put Monday to bed with some thoughts:- Franz Ferdinand nailed it. Well, here we are again. Monday....ew. But for those of you who came along for the ride at Coachella 2009, the memories are probably still cycling around in your brain somewhere. Otherwise, you'd probably be getting some work done instead of trolling the internet looking for the next Albert Ching blog post. Sorry, but can we give this man a raise, honestly? Just yesterday, we showed you some pretty pictures from the Faint and Ladytron at the Grove of Anaheim and Protest the Hero at Chain Reaction. For some folks, that would be enough. But we are not men. We are Devo OC Weekly. So here are a couple more slideshows for your viewing pleasure--Huntington Beach's Matt Costa doing his thing over at the House of Blues Anaheim Saturday night, photographed by John Gilhooley (that's here!) and raucous LA wildmen the Ringers on the final night of their Monday

Andrew YoussefThe full lineup for KROQ's annual Weenie Roast show was released today, a whopping TWELVE DAYS! before the show itself. Seems kinda quick, right? Oh well. It still looks like a pretty good show, headlined by Weezer and Jimmy Eat World (pictured)--they toured together in 2001!--Kings of Leon, Silversun PIckups, Yeah Yeah Yeahs, Rancid, Airborne Toxic Event and the much-polarizing Asher Roth.Tickets for the show, which takes place on May 16 at the Verizon Wireless Amphitheater in Irv

Another busy weekend has come and gone at OC Weeklyville, and we've got pictures from shows this past Friday, Saturday and Sunday. Friday, our old friend Leslie Agan was at the Crosby in downtown Santa Ana, taking some pics of DJ Roam. Chris Cornell's recent solo efforts have received a bit of a mixed reaction, but that didn't stop Chris Victorio from shooting some images of the former Soundgarden/Audioslave lead singer (pictured) on Saturday at the House of Blues in Anaheim. Photo by Andrew YoussefM-I-C . . . See you in the paint . . . K-E-Y . . . Why? Because we OWN you!Disneyland Resort media types had said it would be Kobe Bryant and other unnamed Lakers visiting the Anaheim theme park today for a victory parade down Main Street USA. But just like the name on the MVP award, Bryant was the only Laker to be found. Now, there could be a lot of reasons for this. "We all know art is hard." That's what Cursive said, at least. They didn't play Saturday at the Tour Des Artistes in Long Beach, but a lot of other folks did. You might have read Nate Jackson's recap earlier today (and if not, why not, huh?), and if you would like to see some lovely, lovely pics to go along with that, check out Keith May's slideshow here. Also over the weekend? Andrew Youssef checked out Strung Out Sunday at the House of Blues Anaheim, and those pictures can be found right here.

As they say, Thursday is "little Friday." (Who says that? I dunno. Dorks.) And we're proving it here, as were at not one, but two hoppin' shows around town last night. Show the first: Jason Lytle, former lead singer of Grandaddy, at Art Theatre in Long Beach. Andrew Youssef took some pictures of that, they are here. (And don't forget to read Doug Wallen's interview with Lytle from last week's Weekly, that's here.) Don't think we've forgotten about the DJ-y side of the music world, either (never!

Andrew YoussefHometown heroesIt was the weekend: The weekend No Doubt, on their sold-out reunion tour, came back to town to play an anticipated four nights at the Verizon Wireless Amphitheater in Irvine. While most of the band has since relocated north to Long Beach (and Los Angeles, but let's not speak of that) since meeting mega, worldwide success, we still think No Doubt's a big contender for, well, the biggest band to ever come out of Orange County.
