  • TONIGHT: Erykah Badu at the Grove of Anaheim

The Grove of Anaheim will surprise you sometimes. They'll go a couple weeks without too many shows of note, then they'll come at you with a bunch of stuff all at once, and you're like "hey! Grove of Anaheim! alright!" This is one of those weeks: tomorrow, Taking Back Sunday. Friday, B-Real of Cypress Hill and Bizzy Bone of Bone Thugs-N-Harmony. Tonight? Neo-soul progenitor Erykah Badu, pictured. Badu has won over fans, critics and whoever the people are that give away Grammy awards for more than

  • TONIGHT: Tricky at the House of Blues

Hey, remember the '90s? Sure you do: eight years of peace, Dow at 10,000, icky sex acts in the White House. Also, a British man named Tricky caught the attention of the musical literati with his far-out fusion of hip hop, electronica, trip-hop, rock, coriander, Alice episodes and whatever else he might be feeling on that given day. He's still at it--having released Knowle West Boy, his first new disc in five years, last fall--and is playing the House of Blues in Anaheim tonight. Tickets are $25.

  • Slideshows: Elton John and Billy Joel at the Honda Center, Aushua @ Detroit Bar

Two decidedly different shows went down last night in our county, and we were at 'em both. Sir Elton John and Billy Joel went "Face 2 Face" at the Honda Center in Anaheim, and Beth Stirnaman was there to photographically receive the runoff of their ivory-tickling glory. (That sounded sort of gross. I apologize.) Also, Andrew Youssef shot the last night of Aushua's Monday night Detroit Bar residency; he also grabbed some pics of opening acts Local Native and Living Suns. Those are here! And it's

  • Club Pick: Free Night at Heat Ultra Lounge, Apr. 2

I am a cheap bastard. And I know you can one too, especially when the prospect of getting something for free is dangled in your face. Maybe that's why, for one night only, the folks at Heat are indulging your thrifty ways with a free admission free-for-all tomorrow. Even those of you who can't stand this place have to turn your head and recognize that deal. From the time Heat sprayed it's first vodka cranberry wayyyy back in 2008, it has been home to some of the biggest names in house, trance, j

But we are not men. We are Devo OC Weekly. The Los Angeles Times story published this Monday telling the world Anaheim is now majority-Latino has drawn nothing but derision from the Latino Anaheimers I know (read this musical takedown by Weekly contributor and KPFK-FM 90.7 Subversive Historian Gabriel San Roman). • Slideshows: Chris Cornell, Black Lips, DJ Roam

Another busy weekend has come and gone at OC Weeklyville, and we've got pictures from shows this past Friday, Saturday and Sunday. Friday, our old friend Leslie Agan was at the Crosby in downtown Santa Ana, taking some pics of DJ Roam. Chris Cornell's recent solo efforts have received a bit of a mixed reaction, but that didn't stop Chris Victorio from shooting some images of the former Soundgarden/Audioslave lead singer (pictured) on Saturday at the House of Blues in Anaheim. Is it just me, or does this commercial make the Anaheim Abilites Expo look kind of cool?I mean, a dude in a wheelchair flips off a half pipe! The event starts today at 11:30 a.m. and runs through Sunday. It's intended for anyone in the "disabled community," including caregivers, vendors and people with disabilities. But... it's free, and there's a "wheelchair lacrosse" demonstration. The Anaheim City Council, led by Mayor Curt Pringle, loves to crow about the luxury housing that has and (someday) will continue to pop up within and around the Platinum Triangle, the fabled area near Angel Stadium, Honda Center and the Grove of Anaheim that the city envisions blending "leading-edge business, high-salary employment, world champion entertainment and exciting residential neighborhoods, creating a unique opportunity in the heart of Orange County."Swell.But there are some townfolk w

  • Tomorrow: the Heathens at the Juke Joint

Thursday night is Club Denim at the Juke Joint in Anaheim. The weekly shindig throws in a pinch of rock, a splash of punk and a handful of booze for a fairly debacherous night. And what's more debacherous than motorcycles and power chords? Nuthin'. So when the Heathens (a band I played bass in many moons ago) hit the stage, fathers everywhere will be keeping a tight grip over their daughters. Or something like that. I'm not that good at rock 'n' roll hyperbole. DJs Rowdy and Ren will be spinning

OC Weekly contributor and my occasional KPFK-FM 90.7 producer Gabriel San Roman wrote a great recollection on his personal blog about his days as a varsity basketball player for Savanna High School in Anaheim during the late 1990s. The ostensible reason for the post was a response to arrogant lefties who decry sports as the opiate of the masses; San Roman pointed out that playing prep hoops proved crucial to his political formation."There was never a separation nor was there a sense that basketb

It's a man robbing a Chase Bank branch in Fullerton on June 4 and, according to Johnny Law, the "Clean-cut Bandit" responsible for multiple heists around the county.Given his nickname because of his clean-shaven appearance, the robber's last job was around 2 p.m. June 6 at the Bank of America at 401 N. By now, 2008 just seems like a distant memory doesn't it? Sure you may be saddled with the same debt, the same crappy economy (though I believe it's been taking pride in getting progressively worse lately), but so much else has changed. Maybe it's the feeling of a semi-fresh new year that inspired the Hermosa-based punk legends of Circle Jerks come back to take care of some unfinished business at the House of Blues.
