While its easy to poke fun at this record-setting musical (an 18-year-run in the U.S.), it is based on T.S. Eliots witty poems, and it did make a huge star out of Betty Buckley, and besides the fact that cats totally rule, back in the early 80s every schoolgirl who aspired to be on Star Search sang Memory for her audition piece, thus branding it a pop hit for eternity.
