With a name like Cinco de Mayhem, you just know this one is going to be a corker. Featuring platter spinning and general zaniness courtesy of Long Beach DJ and impresario Mr. Todd, the Pike Bar will soon host a soiree complete with guest DJs (e.g. Mr. Todd and Fiends), film clips of mariachis and Mexican wrestling, student-produced animated shorts as well as a campy hodgepodge of music ranging from metal and polka to the occasional mariachi LP played on 45 speed. It’s a bizarre re-imagining of the centuries-old art form. Were he attending the event, mariachi icon Vicente Fernandez might be proud.
