Since 1980, the band Negativland has made records, video, radio, books, and live performances using appropriations taken mostly from corporately-owned mass culture—and they’ve got the lawsuits to prove it. Rearranging content to recontextualize its meaning, the band’s approach to “culture jamming” (a term they coined in 1984) has positioned them as key advocates for significant reform of US copyright laws.
