For every role he played, Chaney did his own makeup and transformed himself into one iconic character after another: Quasimodo from 1923’s Hunchback of Notre Dame ; the sharp-toothed Professor Burke from the infamous lost film London After Midnight , and a downright evil Fagin in one of the first adaptations of Oliver Twist .
