Zachary Joshua Reeder, Teacher-Coach Alleged to Pose as Girl to Lure Boys, to be Arraigned

After Zachary Joshua Reeder, a 30-year-old teacher at the all-boys Catholic Servite High School who'd also taught or coached baseball at Irvine's Beckman and Mission Viejo's Capistrano Valley high schools, was arrested in February for allegedly posing as a girl on Facebook to lure underage boys, we updated our original post to show how dozens of alleged victims came forward due to the publicity and the resulting number of felony counts ballooned to 140. As the Orange resident faces an arraignment hearing in Newport Beach Friday morning, the charges and potential penalty have been scaled back.

It is still a very serious case against Reeder, who is accused of encouraging sex acts and soliciting and possessing nude photos and
videos of more than 100 underage boys. He is to be arraigned on
charges of–take a deep breath before continuing–22 felony counts of using a minor for sex acts, 15 felony
counts of distributing pornography to a minor, 13 felony counts of
contacting a child with the intent to commit a lewd act, six felony
counts of lewd acts upon a child, two felony counts of lewd acts upon a
child under 14, one felony count of possession and control of child
pornography, and one felony count of distribution of child pornography.

If Reeder, who is married, the father of a young child and out on $1 million bail, is convicted of all that, he could be sentenced to 44 years in state prison and
a lifetime of having to register as a sex offender. At the time the 140 counts were revealed, he was looking at life in prison.

Zachary Joshua Reeder, High School Coach-Teacher, Allegedly Posed as Girl Online to Get Dirty Pics of Boys

Between June 1, 2010, and Jan. 14 of this year, Reeder is accused of creating
and using a Facebook account to pose as a female high school student by
using the image of a blond-haired girl, according to prosecutors. He is accused of having established inappropriate online
relationships with at least 106 underage boys between the ages of 13 and
17 from Servite, Beckman, Northwood, and Canyon High Schools.

Does it get creepier? Indeed: he allegedly targeted boys he knew through teaching
or coaching, claims an arraignment statement from the Orange County District Attorney's office (OCDA). As the girl, Reeder allegedly convinced the boys to send him sexually explicit
photos and videos of themselves.

An Irvine Police Department investigation led to Reeder's Feb. 9 arrest, but detectives are still trying to determine if there might be other victims. Anyone with information is asked to contact Supervising District Attorney Investigator Anthony
Sosnowski at 714.347.8794 or Irvice Police Detective Frough Jahid at 949.724.7184.
