Woman Shot to Death in Anaheim Park
Tale of the tape.
UPDATE NO. 3, MAY 16, 11:56 A.M.: Claudia Espino Garcia, who had not lived with Humberto Servin since 2008, was meeting him at a park as their daughter was being let out of a nearby school Wednesday afternoon when he fatally shot his estranged wife, according to prosecutors. Servin was scheduled to be arraigned today on a count of murder with a sentencing enhancement for the discharge of a firearm causing death, says the Orange County District Attorney's office, which was to request bail be set at $2 million. A conviction on those charges could send Servin to state prison for 50 years to life. The couple's daughter ran toward her mother's car to help her as Servin drove off in his truck, the OCDA alleges. City News Service quotes an Anaheim police official saying there were no reports of domestic disturbances when the couple lived in that city. Meanwhile, Orange County Superior Court records indicate that on May 22, 2012, Garcia was ordered to pay $283 a month in child support for the couple's two sons, who are now 17 and 14. Authorities have not released the age of the daughter. Crescent Elementary School and an Orange Unified School District Pre-K special education school are near Peralta Canyon Park.
UPDATE NO. 2, MAY 13, 1:13 P.M.: Apparently getting slammed with media requests, the Anaheim Police Department today released a booking photo, victim identity and more information about the fatal shooting at Peralta Park. The victim has been identified as Claudia Espino Garcia,
32, 42,, of Tustin. The length of her relationship to husband Humberto Servin and the details surrounding their estrangement are still being investigated, according to Sgt. Daron Wyatt. The couple had three children, whose genders are not being released. They are now in the care of Orange County Social Services. "A firearm was recovered in the suspect's vehicle," Wyatt said. "While we believe it is the murder weapon, only forensic testing will be able to confirm that it is."
UPDATE NO. 1, MAY 13, 9:09 A.M.: The alleged killer of the woman found shot in Peralta Canyon Park Thursday afternoon has been identified as her estranged husband, Humberto Servin. The 49-year-old Orange resident was booked on suspicion of murder at the Anaheim Police Detention Facility, where his bail was set at $1 million. The Anaheim Police Department's Sgt. Daron Wyatt released these additional details from the incident: Upon arrival at the park, officers found the unidentified woman seated in the driver’s seat of a white vehicle in the parking lot, where she was suffering from gunshot wounds.? She was later pronounced deceased at Orange County Global Medical Center in Santa Ana. There were several eyewitnesses to the shooting, including some children, in the park and at a nearby school. Some quickly provided a detailed description of the shooter and his vehicle to police, and within 15 minutes a gray 2002 Dodge Ram was found in the parking lot of the Anaheim Police Department East District substation at 8201 E. Santa Ana Canyon Road. Servin, who was nearby, was detained without incident. The motive for the shooting is still being investigated. Any witnesses who were d not contacted by police are asked to contact Orange County Crime Stoppers at 855.847.6227 (855-TIP-OCCS), via occrimestoppers.org or by texting to 274637 (C-R-I-M-E-S) from a cell phone. Neither the victim nor the suspect have been identified, although Anaheim Police Sgt. Daron Wyatt says it is believed the pair had some relationship to one another.
The Anaheim Police Department was notified at 2:37 p.m. that a woman was shot in Peralta Park, 115 N. Pinney Dr., Wyatt said.
She was taken to an area hospital, where she was pronounced dead, Wyatt added.
The park was filled with families, and witnesses gave descriptions of the shooter and the vehicle he left the area in, and that led to an arrest about 15 minutes after the shooting, Wyatt said.
Crescent Elementary School and Canyon High School were briefly placed under a lockdown, which was subsequently lifted, he said.
