To help celebrate the arrival of an indie darling notable for breaking the record of the most dogs used in a single film (274, and all of them mixed-breed dogs adopted by local animal shelters), Frida Cinema in downtown Santa Ana is teaming up with the nonprofit rescue organization Barks of Love to present a mobile pet adoption station Sunday.

The critically-acclaimed Hungarian film White God, winner of the Cannes Film Festival's Un Certain Regard award, actually opens today at the Frida, 304 E. Fourth St., Santa Ana.
Zsófia Psottafter stars as a young girl who is forced to give up her beloved dog Hagen (played by canine twins Luke and Body, themselves the winners of the special Palm Dog award at Cannes) because its mixed-breed heritage is deemed “unfit” by The State. Determined to reunite, she sets off on a dangerous journey to find him, unaware that Hagen has set off on the same journey of his own and become the leader of so-called “unfit” dogs.
Frida's Logan Crow describes White God as “a brutal, masterful parable that has taken the arthouse world by storm with its audacity and stunning originality.” Here is the trailer:
On Sunday, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m., the outdoor courtyard of Crow's cinema space will host the Barks of Love mobile pet adoption station, where it is hoped good homes can be found for rescued dogs. The Frida will also be running early screenings of White God that day, at 11 a.m. and 2:30 p.m.
