Wax On, Wax Off: Cycle Zombies Third Annual Motorcycle Rally BBQ Skate Jam

by John Gilhooley
This past Saturday, Hurley International hosted the Cycle Zombies' Third Annual Motorcycle Rally BBQ Skate Jam at their sprawling headquarters in Costa Mesa. The founders and contributors to the event and its corresponding blog are listed as "Turkey," "GEORGE," "Big Scott," and "Rat Zombie." For those of you who may not know, Scotty and Turkey Stopnick, along with their cousin Chase who helped out with the event, are some all-around grungy dudes in the local surf scene. They build bikes, rip at surfing, and work in a variety of different areas of the industry.

With a range of sponsors like Hurley, Vestal, Dice Magazine and more, the event drew a big crowd and featured an awesome line-up of people and products from this more haunted, underground part of OrangeCounty's surf culture. Food was provided by local favorite TK Burger, and the gathering featured live performances by Harbortown Saints, Thee Cormans and Black Fuzz. And of course, a bunch of leathery old sailor-type surfer dudes and their custom bikes formed the main attraction of the rally.

OC Weekly photographer and local surfer John Gilhooley snapped some great photos of this weekend's event. He called the Stopnick brothers and the others involved with the event "Hurley-sponsored surfers and skaters...chopper-building cool cats."
