After hours of searching, authorities recovered what they believe to be Le's backpack from the river.

According to Sergeant Diane Hecht, Friday's vigorous search ended at nightfall and resumed Saturday at 5 a.m. along Camp Bonita Prairie Forks Road.

“This is the second report we've gotten this week, ” states Hecht. “Last Thursday [March 31], a hiker fell into the river at a similar location and was carried away, although this man was fortunate enough to pass another hiker downstream who was strong enough to pull him out of the water. People don't realize just how swift the river in that area, especially with the recent rainfall.”

Le's family and friends spent the night trying to mobilize community support for the continued search effort, including an official “Pray for Joe Search Party” on Facebook.
“It's killing me that I can't be there personally,” says An Nguyen, a close friend and ex-classmate of Le's who has been imploring friends and acquaintances in Southern California to help with the search from her home in New York City.
