Someone broke into a home through a rear window around 2:30 a.m. on Jan. 11, 2009, and entered the room where a 7-year-old girl was sleeping with her two younger siblings. The girl was tickled and her blanket tugged, causing her to awake, kick and scream. The intruder left through an open window but left fingerprints behind, according to an Orange County District Attorney's office (OCDA) statement.
On July 12 of that same year, a 22-year-old woman sleeping with her boyfriend in a Santa Ana home had someone reach in through a window and touch her foot at about 5 a.m. She awoke, screamed and called 9-1-1 as the intruder fled.
Then, about 3:50 a.m. on Oct. 25, 2009, a man entered the Santa Ana bedroom of a sleeping 19-year-old woman through a window, waking her by rubbing her thighs and arms until she awoke and called police as he fled.
It was a sleeping 13-year-old girl's Santa Ana home that a stranger entered around 1 a.m. on Jan. 24, 2010, when the side of her body was stroked, causing her to wake and scream. The creeper left through the backdoor, and the girl's mom called 9-1-1.
Finally, around 11 p.m. on Feb. 19, 2010, an 11-year-old girl was sleeping when a man broke in through a bedroom window, waking her. The sicko held her down and covered her mouth as he touched her crotch and chest over her clothing. She managed to break free by kicking and pushing him away, and he managed to flee the residence through an open window.
The Santa Ana Police Department managed to collect DNA evidence at that crime scene. On May 7, 2010, the crime lab matched that sample to one collected as part of Reyes' 2003 burglary conviction, which had resulted in a four-year prison sentence and deportation back to Mexico.
Detectives determined Reyes sneaked back into the country and was working at a local landscaping business. After he was picked up for questioning, he admitted to touching the females, police said in arresting him at the time.
According to the OCDA, Reyes' prints have since been linked to that first January 2009 break-in. He is now charged with one felony count of forcible lewd act on a child under 14, two felony counts of lewd act upon child under 14, and three felony counts of first degree residential burglary with sentencing enhancement allegations for committing lewd acts in the commission of residential burglaries, committing lewd acts on multiple victims, and for having a non-accomplice present during a residential burglary.
UPDATE, NOV. 15, 12:30 A.M.: A jury today found Roberto Jacobo Reyes guilty of breaking into strangers' homes and touching sleeping females, including sexually assaulting girls ages 11 and 13.
The Santa Ana 49-year-old was convicted on one felony count of forcible lewd act on a child under 14, two felony counts of lewd act upon child under 14, and three felony counts of first degree residential burglary with sentencing enhancement allegations for committing lewd acts in the commission of residential burglaries, committing lewd acts on multiple victims, and for having a non-accomplice present during a residential burglary, and a sentencing enhancement for a 2003 prior strike for residential burglary. Trying saying that 10 times fast!
His sentencing hearing, where he faces punishment of up to 194 years to life in state prison, is scheduled for Jan. 25 in Santa Ana.
