Tustin DUI Checkpoint and Sheriff's Booze Patrols in 3 South County Cities Begin Tonight

Tustin is running a DUI/drivers license checkpoint from 7 tonight through 2 a.m. Saturday.

That's the same day and start time for DUI saturation patrols in Dana Point, San Clemente and San Juan Capistrano, although those Sheriff's Department operations continue through 3 a.m. Saturday.

Neither law enforcement agency released specific locations.

Here is the only clue in a statement Tustin cops sent over.

“Based on collision statistics and frequency of DUI arrests, DUI checkpoints are placed in locations that have the greatest opportunity for achieving drunk and drugged driving deterrence,” it reads. “Locations are chosen with safety considerations for the officers and the public.”

That's pretty much the same criteria for the saturation patrols, which have the sheriff's department sending deputies to areas known for drunken driving arrests, collisions and fatalities. These are special patrols beyond those normally deployed in the sheriff's contract cities.

Funding for checkpoints and saturation patrols is provided by a grant from the California Office of Traffic Safety, through the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration. You're encouraged to call 9-1-1 if you see a drunken driver on the road. Or driving off the road, presumably.
