Tony Scott Remembered With Cinematic Tribute at Regency South Coast Village Theater
As the Los Angeles County coroner continues to probe the apparent suicide of Tony Scott, and a private memorial service is held this weekend, an Orange County theater is whipping up a cinematic tribute to the British-born director.
Regency Theatres South Coast Village in Santa Ana presents "In Appreciation of Tony Scott" Monday through Thursday evenings with four films starring two of his favorite leading men.
Theater operators are asking that patrons wear red hats to show their appreciation for the Hollywood A-lister, who was rarely seen without his trademark red baseball hat.
"Tony Scott was a visionary and had a great eye for action, while immersing you in a great story" states Lyndon Golin, president of Regency Theatres, in an email. "He will go down in history as one of the greatest crowd pleasing directors."
A different crowd pleaser rolls at 7:30 each evening of the tribute, which on Wednesday takes the slot of the regularly scheduled Classic Film Night. The films, brief descriptions and show days are:
A former assassin (Denzel Washington) takes revenge on a group that attacks a family he is guarding. Christopher Walken, Dakota Fanning and Mickey Rourke also star in the 2004 thriller. (Monday)
A hot-shot driver (Tom Cruise) tears up the track, the sheets and his team when he gets his shot at NASCAR racing. Nicole Kidman and Robert Duval co-star in the 1990 action pic. (Wednesday)
A huge hit when the it came out in 1986, the action drama has gone on to become mocked mercifully for its homo-eroticism. Cruise plays a hot-shot fighter jet pilot in training with the nickname "Maverick," recklessly taking us up where we belong. Val Kilmer, Kelly McGillis, Meg Ryan and "Goose" himself, Anthony Edwards, co-star. (Thursday, Aug. 30)
South Coast Village is at 1561 W. Sunflower Ave, Santa Ana, across the street from South Coast Plaza. Call 714.557.5701(recording) or 714.557.5703 (live) for more information.
