Todd Robert Sousa, a former youth swim club coach who owned a swimming school with his wife, was reportedly jailed Wednesday on suspicion of having sex with an underage girl who took lessons from him.
That's especially rough for the 38-year-old Irvine father--and son-in-law of a retiring Laguna Hills city councilman--because Sousa just completed a prison stretch for having sex with a different 15-year-old girl.
For the unlawful sexual relationship with the 15-year-old female, Sousa in October 2011 cut a deal with the judge to plead guilty to 13 felony counts of lewd acts on a child, three felony counts of unlawful sexual intercourse, and two misdemeanor counts of contributing to the delinquency of a minor in exchange for 16 months in state prison.
The admitted child pervert was also required to register as a sex offender, which bars him from Orange County county and city parks and recreational areas that have created child safety zones, including those in Irvine, where Sousa resides, and Laguna Hills, where his wife's father Joel Lautenschleger is a founding city councilman.
When Lautenschleger led a move on the council to delay a vote on the ordinance that created the sex offender ban in Laguna Hills parks, some feared he may have been acting less out of his expressed fears about problems with the law and more to protect Sousa. But the council, including Lautenschleger, voted to approve the measure in December.
An informant's tip accusing Sousa of having sex with another teen girl led investigators to interview the alleged victim and then the suspect, who was booked Wednesday and held in lieu of $200,000 bail pending a scheduled Friday court appearance, according to the sheriff's department.
The new girl, whose age has not been released, reportedly told investigators she and Sousa had sex at an Anaheim hotel after meeting at Disneyland and in a Lake Forest office. Deputies believe the encounters occurred in August 2010 and on Feb. 24, 2011.
The latter is the same day deputies placed Sousa under arrest on the pool deck while he was in the middle of swim practice at JSerra High School, accusing him of repeated unlawful sex and sex acts with his 15-year-old female student from April 1, 2010, to Feb. 18, 2011.
Sousa used to coach of the boys' swim team at Woodbridge High School in Irvine, but at the time of his original arrest he was on the Irvine Aquazot Swim Club staff. He and his wife's Swim Ventures swim school used pools throughout South County.
