Spend Your Valentine's Date with Harold and Maude … in a Cemetery

Hey, who wants to spend their Valentine's date Friday night at a movie about a young man obsessed with death–right down to staging fake suicides, attending funerals and driving a Hearse–falling in love with a 79-year-old woman who teaches him how to love life?

Oh, and did I mention it's screening in a cemetery?

It's Hal Ashby's 1971 cult classic Harold and Maude, which is set to roll at Sunnyside Cemetery, 1095 E. Willow St., Long Beach. Gates (creaky iron gates, one assumes) open at 6:30 p.m. Friday.

The event kicks off the Lolas Outdoor Retro Cinema series presented by Long Beach Cinematheque and Lola's Mexican Cuisine, who will show outdoor films to the Long Beach community throughout the year, including five screenings at Sunnyside Cemtery.

As Cinematheque reminds, Harold and Maude is celebrated for being a hilarious comedy, a unique romance, an inspiring work of existentialism, a showcase for a really young Bud Cort (and his late septuagenarian co-star, Ruth Gordon), and for featuring some great Cat Stevens tunes. In fact, at 7:30 p.m. (or a half hour before the flick rolls), live Cat Stevens tunes will be performed by local musicians Alyssandra Nighswonger, Will Morrison, Lili De La Mora, Aeron Archambault, Anthony Pedroza, Dennis Robicheau, Elizabeth Messick Fernandez and Rod Harrison.

Admission is $10. You are encouraged to bring low-back chairs and/or blankets and, if you're hungry, picnic meals and snacks. Limited parking is available on site on a first-come, first-served basis. Visit lbcinema.org for more details.
