Two days before a luncheon dedicated to raising awareness and funds to fight the growing problem of human trafficking in Orange County, a documentary will be shown with the same goal in mind. But if you attend either Vanguard University event, you may also want to kick some shekels to the film's makers, who have apparently been victimized in another way.
"Neoflix, the company that was handling our home viewing DVD sales, has gone out of business and not acted with integrity when it comes to paying filmmakers," reads a message on the Own the DVD page for Pointy Shoe Productions' SOLD: Fighting the New Global Slave Trade.
"This has cost us many hundreds of dollars so until we locate a reputable distributor, we are doing our best to sell the film ourselves."
Follow the link above to buy the DVD for $24 and change, although I bet if you sent a donation of any amount to the Alexandria, VA, address given, Pointy Shoe would appreciate it.
Costa Mesa-based Vanguard University's Global Center for Women and Justice (GCWJ) and the committee for the annual More Priceless Than Diamonds Luncheon host the special screening at 6:30 p.m. Thursday at Lido Theatre in Newport Beach.
Produced by Jody Hassett Sanchez, formerly of CNN and ABC News, SOLD "offers a snapshot of human trafficking in three areas of the world," says Alexis Miller, coordinator for the GCWJ. "We hope this screening provides our community a deeper understanding of the complex problem, and a reminder that it is also happening right here in Orange County."
