The animal activist blowback to plans to systematically rid Seal Beach of coyotes is scheduled to be heard by the City Council tonight amid a new Change.org petition aimed at stopping eradication efforts.

Assemblyman and Supervisor Candidate Allan Mansoor Inspires Fantasy Coyote Mission

"The City Council of Seal Beach, California has confirmed that the city will move forward with plans to kill native coyotes," reads the petition introduction posted by Gordon Snead of Long Beach. "This senseless killing could begin any day now. Please help stop this needless and cruel slaughter now."

He acknowledges coyotes can be a nuisance, but claims "it has been determined that the best deterrent is a fence--not needless slaughter." He cites a Mount San Antonio College professor who has found "trapping the coyotes is a shortsighted, misguided response that could backfire," explaining it could weed out weaker coyotes and create "larger packs of smarter, more aggressive coyotes."

"Science must be put front and center of decisions about wildlife and the environment," Snead argues. "The City Council of Seal Beach must recognize that this is the wrong policy for Seal Beach."
