Santa Ana, Newport Beach Checkpoints Tonight Begin Weekend of Targeting Drunken Drivers
It's not a holiday weekend nor days of non-holiday celebrating like the ones for ol' St. Patrick, but cops will nonetheless be out in force with DUI checkpoints and other enforcement operations aimed at removing boozy and druggy drivers from roads.
These kick off tonight with sobriety stops in Santa Ana and Newport Beach and anti-DUI patrols in Laguna Woods, Laguna Hills, Aliso Viejo and Laguna Niguel.
Santa Ana's checkpoint is scheduled to run from 7:30 p.m. through 1:30 a.m. Saturday along Fifth Street between Fairview Road and Bristol Avenue (closer to Fairview).
The Newport Beach operation goes from 9 tonight through 3 a.m. Saturday at Dover Drive and 16th Street.
The sheriff's department DUI Task Force blankets streets in Laguna Woods, Laguna Hills, Aliso Viejo and Laguna Niguel with histories of DUI-related citations, crashes and fatalities from 7 tonight through 3 a.m. Saturday.
Long Beach Police are to put up a checkpoint somewhere in the east part of the city from 7 p.m. Saturday through 3 a.m. Sunday.
Though not directly related to impaired driving, the city of Costa Mesa previously announced a month-long enforcement of poor driving by motorcyclists. Huntington Beach Police plan to target two-wheelers all day and night Sunday.
As always, funding for anti-DUI ops are funded by grants from the California Office of Traffic Safety, through the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.
