Robert August, The Endless Summer Surf Icon, Faces Foreclosure On HB Home

In the years leading up to the 1966 debut of The Endless Summer, Robert August accompanied his surfing co-star, Mike Hynson on a then-unimaginable surf trip around the world in search of the perfect wave.

Over 40 years later, following his launch into surf stardom, a successful surfboard building company and a variety of Endless Summer-inspired projects (clothing, wine label and a restaurant), August is facing foreclosure on a home in Huntington Beach, which is scheduled for auction, the Orange County Register reports.

August is said to owe $337,337.97 on the loan. The auction will take place on Dec. 8 at 1:30 p.m. at the Orange County courthouse in Santa Ana.

The home covers 1,340-square-feet, with three bedrooms and two baths, and sits on a 6,630 square-foot lot.

Despite their starring roles in The Endless Summer, which reportedly has grossed $30 million, August and Hynson didn't receive much. Though they talked with a lawyer and tried to get director Bruce Brown to give them a fair cut of the profits, August ended up with only $5,000, a new car and “help getting set up in business,” as OC Weekly discovered (“Mike Hynson, Co-Star of 'The Endless Summer,' Resurfaces With Tales of the Brotherhood” by Nick Schou, July 9, 2009).

In recent years, August has been involved with surf cruises, and on his website, items with his Endless Summer poster likeness include skateboards, bikes, clothing, coffee mugs, golf balls and more are for sale. August regularly attends legends gatherings, surf industry events and spends time at his home in Costa Rica. He's been involved with various charities, including the Free Wheelchair Mission.
Navel Gazing has tried to contact to the August family for comment, but have not yet heard back.
