Richard Newton Has More of His Short Films Rolling in Laguna Art Museum Tonight

Richard Newton, an artist who would embed himself in various locations to find odd, ordinary images (moving and otherwise) that a wide spectrum of people could relate to, has a collection of his short films rolling tonight at Laguna Art Museum.

“Some Poets: Short Films from 1969-1987 by Richard Newton,” begins at 7 p.m. at the Coast Highway museum.

Newton's films are already known to many locals as several from 1969 to 1979 screened in 2011-12 at Laguna Art Museum and UC Irvine as part of “Best Kept Secret,” an exhibition curated by Grace Kook-Anderson. “Some Poets” is considered an extension of these screenings, according to officials at the Laguna Beach museum.

Here's how they describe tonight's program:

Since the 1960s, Richard Newton has developed an artistic practice continuously pushing the parameters of film, performance, and installation. Often his works are doused with a keen sense of humor, inspired by anything from socio-political issues to the most mundane observations.

Tonight's screening is free to museum members or anyone who pays the usual admission fee ($5-$7). Tickets can be purchased online at www.LagunaArtMuseum.org or by calling Valerie Tate at 949.494.8971, extension 203.
